Botev Plovdiv President Iliyan Filipov Killed in Plovdiv Shooting

Botev Plovdiv president Iliyan Filipov has been killed in a shooting in Plovdiv, with the club immediately suspending first-team and academy activities as players, staff and supporters mourn his death.

Why Filipov’s death is a major blow for Botev Plovdiv

Item Detail
Time of shooting About 1 a.m.
League position Sixth in the Bulgarian First League
Botev record 16 points from 10 matches
Gap to leaders Levski Sofia Nine points, with Botev having played one match more
Next scheduled league fixture Slavia Sofia at home, 10 October

Police were alerted to a person suffering from gunshot wounds shortly before officers reached the scene and found Filipov dead. A pre-trial investigation has been opened, with officers continuing their work at the location. No suspected attacker or possible reason for the killing has been made public.

Filipov was a prominent figure in Bulgaria’s transport sector and had become central to Botev’s recent recovery. The club credited him with helping to rescue the side during the summer of 2025 and with overseeing the completion of the reconstruction of Hristo Botev Stadium, described by Botev as Bulgaria’s most modern sporting venue.

In its tribute, Botev said Filipov’s role in preserving the club and his commitment to its yellow-and-black identity would remain a lasting part of its history. The club offered condolences to his family, friends and relatives, while describing his work on the stadium and his ambition for a stronger, unified Botev as a legacy for future generations.

Fixtures and training placed on hold

Botev have called off their planned friendly against Septemvri Sofia and cancelled the men’s first-team training session scheduled for the day of the announcement. The club has also postponed all academy matches due to take place over the coming weekend.

Until the home meeting with Slavia Sofia on 10 October, first-team sessions will be conducted behind closed doors. Botev will not hold media engagements during that period.

The interruption comes as the Canaries seek to remain in contention for European qualification through their league position. The coaching staff now face the immediate task of helping the squad regain stability before domestic action resumes.

Investigation remains open

Authorities have not identified a motive or announced any suspects. The killing has also prompted renewed attention in Bulgaria because of memories of the mafia-style murders of public figures during the 1990s, amid heightened political tension before next month’s presidential election.
