Bayern Munich rule out move for Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz
Bayern Munich have moved to end any suggestion of a return to Germany for Florian Wirtz, with president Herbert Hainer stating that the Bundesliga champions are not planning an approach for the Liverpool midfielder despite his difficult opening months in England.
What changed for the club
Wirtz joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in 2025 after establishing himself as one of the Bundesliga’s standout young attacking players. His adjustment at Anfield has not yet matched the level he reached in Germany, prompting speculation that Bayern could seek to bring the 23-year-old back to the Bundesliga.
Hainer has rejected that possibility. Bayern admire the Germany international but believe their current group already has the required depth and quality, leaving no place for a prospective move for Wirtz.
“Florian Wirtz is an exceptional player,” Hainer said. He added that Bayern are very satisfied with their squad and that a transfer is therefore not under consideration.
The Bayern president also expressed sympathy for Wirtz’s slow adaptation to English football, particularly given the midfielder’s importance to Germany.
Competition context
Wirtz has remained a regular selection for Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola, starting each of the club’s first eight matches across the Premier League and Champions League this season.
That continued faith has so far produced limited end product. The playmaker has registered two assists in those eight appearances and is still waiting to consistently impose himself in the final third as he did during his time at Leverkusen.
- Wirtz is 23 and joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in 2025.
- He has started all eight Liverpool fixtures in the Premier League and Champions League.
- His return stands at two assists across those matches.
His performances have drawn attention in Germany, but Bayern’s position means the player has no immediate escape route through a move to Munich.
What is scheduled next
Wirtz’s immediate task is to turn regular starts into greater attacking influence for Liverpool. Iraola’s selections indicate that the midfielder remains central to his plans, but Wirtz will need to improve his goal involvement as the season develops.
There is also an international consideration for Germany. Hainer said the national side need Wirtz performing at his best ahead of forthcoming commitments, placing further focus on how quickly he can rediscover the form that made him such a prominent figure at Leverkusen.
