ARD Game Jam 2026 Kicks Off Aug 21 With €2,500 Browser Game Challenge

The ARD Game Jam is back in 2026 with a tight 48-hour development challenge, a theme reveal timed for the start of the event, and a total prize pool of €2,500 for teams racing to ship a browser game. The competition runs from 21 to 23 August, with the motto announced at the moment the marathon begins and a Twitch livestream kicking off early in the evening.

ARD Game Jam 2026 21–23 August 2026 48 hours Browser game €2,500

The theme for this year’s jam will be revealed directly at the start on Friday, 21 August at 19:00 on the ARD Twitch channel. From that point, participants have until 23 August to turn their idea into a working, playable browser game. Sign-ups are open starting now.

On 21 August, the live stream begins at 18:15 on Twitch—just ahead of the theme drop and the official start signal later that evening.

48 hours, five judging areas, and a theme-interpretation category

Looking ahead to the judging, the €2,500 prize money is divided across multiple categories: Artwork, Audio, Narrative, Creativity, and an “Interpretation of the Theme” track. That last category is set up to reward teams that go beyond a surface-level concept and translate the theme into gameplay, structure, or player-facing choices.

For context, the first ARD Game Jam held in March 2025 ran under the motto “Kaputt.” That earlier event saw 676 developers across Germany take part, resulting in 164 games built within the same 48-hour timeframe, streamed live on Twitch.

Who’s running the jam, and who’s judging in 2026

Project management for the 2026 edition is handled again by Matthias Leitner and Laura Urban. The organizing team behind the competition is the Bayerischer Rundfunk, specifically through its Puls format. Support is also listed from partners including the industry association Game and the location initiative Games Bavaria.

The jury lineup for ARD Game Jam 2026 includes:

  • Lena Fischer (CreatiF Center)
  • Rudolf Inderst (Hochschule Neu-Ulm)
  • Laura Urban (PR)
  • Kim Fóri, also known as “PikaKimi30” (Game Design student and Gamesfestival 2026 youth festival lead)
  • Andreas Suika (moderator & game designer)
  • Anna Rebecca Unterholzner (professor for Game Design & Development)
  • Kevin Nitsch (Puls Gaming Analyse)
  • Robin Rottmann (Teamlead Games Bavaria)

Sign-ups open now ahead of the 21 August Twitch start

With the theme held back until the event kicks off, the key countdown is now the Friday evening reveal on Twitch at 19:00, following the livestream start at 18:15. Development then runs for 48 hours, ending with a browser-game submission deadline on 23 August, and participants will compete across the five prize categories as soon as judging criteria are applied.
