Another Studio Turns Down Baldur’s Gate 4, Leaving Hasbro Searching

Hasbro is still searching for the right developer to build Baldur’s Gate 4, but at least one studio lead it approached has declined. With Baldur’s Gate 3 delivering a massive breakthrough, the next installment is shaping up to be an especially tough assignment—and it appears another developer with ties to the franchise isn’t looking to take it on.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is widely remembered for characters that are both memorable and genuinely fun, which only raises the bar for what comes next—especially for players who expect big improvements as the series moves forward.

Why Hasbro is struggling to find a studio for Baldur’s Gate 4

In an interview with PC Gamer, it was revealed that Hasbro reached out to James Ohlen, a lead designer on the first two Baldur’s Gate games, to see whether he could step in as a development lead for the next title. Hasbro had already contacted Larian for a follow-up, but the studio ultimately declined the offer.

Ohlen explains that the timing of the outreach mattered: he says that the same day the current CEO of Hasbro learned Larian wasn’t interested, the CEO contacted him directly to ask if he wanted to work on Baldur’s Gate 4. Ohlen’s reply was direct—he wasn’t interested—because he believed the project would be something he couldn’t realistically succeed at.

As part of his reasoning, Ohlen pointed to the difficulty of following up on the popularity and success of Baldur’s Gate 3, describing it as “insanity” to try to take on that challenge. He also discussed the production realities of building a sequel: since Baldur’s Gate 3 was developed on Larian’s own proprietary engine, Ohlen suspects it would take “half a decade of horror” to create all the necessary pieces for a comparable next game.

Finally, Ohlen added that if Baldur’s Gate 4 is going to land well, the people working on it should “do everything different,” echoing how his own team approached the original Baldur’s Gate.

Baldur’s Gate 3 raised the expectations

Beyond the development hurdles, the conversation also reflects a more player-facing problem: Baldur’s Gate 3 is celebrated for its entertaining cast of characters. That kind of impact sets a high bar for any future entry—both in terms of writing, personality, and overall player experience—making Baldur’s Gate 4 a particularly demanding prospect.
