Valheim Portal Guide: Unlock, Build, and Link Fast Travel Quickly
In Valheim, portals are a major quality-of-life upgrade for players who want to stop trekking across a massive world every time they need to relocate. Once unlocked and built, they allow fast travel between locations in seconds—but only if you meet the requirements, gather the right materials, and understand the differences between portal types.
Why portals matter in Valheim
Because Valheim features an enormous map, early exploration often forces long overland journeys. After you push into new biomes, getting back can take far longer than the initial trip. Portals solve that by enabling quick movement across distance once they’re available to you.
Getting started: wood portals
Wood portals aren’t something you can place immediately. The game requires you to unlock the building plan first, and that unlock depends on collecting a specific material.
- You unlock the wood portal recipe by collecting your first instance of “Edles Holz” (Fine Wood).
- After that, the building plan for a wood portal becomes available automatically.
- To construct the portal, you need to combine Fine Wood with additional resources at a workbench.
Materials required for a wood portal
- 10 Graydwarf Eyes
- 20 Fine Wood
- 2 Surtling Cores
Where to find those resources
- Graydwarf Eyes: Found in the Meadows (the first biome of your journey) when you defeat Graydwarves; some drop their eyes.
- Fine Wood: Drops from trees like birch when using a bronze axe.
- Surtling Cores: Earned fastest by exploring burial chambers in the Black Forest.
Wood portal limits (and the naming requirement)
Wood portals come with an important restriction: you can’t use them to move critical cargo such as ore. They’re intended for transporting people, not heavy materials.
Portals also need to be set up correctly to work. If you build two portals of the same type, you can name them—and only by giving the portals you want to connect the same name will they function together and transport you between them.
Stone portals: better for moving valuable resources
There’s also a second portal type: the stone portal. It looks more rugged than the wood option and, crucially, it can move important materials such as ore or metals more easily than wood portals.
How to unlock the stone portal
To access the stone portal, you’re expected to go to the Ashlands, loot there, and explore the region.

Building the stone portal requires a new workshop tier: the stonecutter, plus additional ingredients.

So… are portals worth using?
Portals can be extremely helpful for quickly traveling around Valheim, but some players reportedly refuse to use them. Whether you rely on them for convenience or prefer to move by foot, understanding the portal types and their constraints is key to building a setup that fits how you play.
