Documented cases include situations where systems were updated from BIOS 3.18 to 3.20 and appeared to hang for hours when using the EFI Shell method, with follow-up reports describing similar stalls.
Framework’s own “known issues” list at the time of review did not mention the possibility of ending up with an unbootable board. Instead, it listed other potential concerns, including problems related to BIOS output in standalone operation, missing display output during part of a PD firmware update, and unstable USB-C connections with iPhones—leaving the confirmed “brick” risk out of the public notice.
There are also examples that complicate a simple cause-and-effect narrative. In the same community discussions, some users reported successfully updating directly to BIOS 3.20. Framework’s approach to recovery is meant to reduce this kind of requirement, but the company has not yet provided details on when that future “Crisis Recovery Mode” will arrive.
Earlier firmware had a “wrong platform” brick risk
Framework has also referenced a related concern from an older release in the same platform family. In the release notes for BIOS 3.17, the company previously described a bug where the BIOS update process could run on the wrong platform, explicitly warning that this could lead to a bricked system. BIOS 3.17 was intended to fix that problem.
Whether that older defect has any connection to the current BIOS 3.20 unbootable-board reports remains unknown.
