Half-Life 2 VR Mod Verified for Steam Frame After Valve’s Steam Deck-Style Push

Valve’s “Verified” push for Steam Deck-style VR on the Steam Frame just gained a new highlight: Half-Life 2: VR Mod has been cleared for the platform, despite originally being built for Windows PC VR and without requiring a gaming PC. The free fan-made VR conversion from the Source VR Mod team is now positioned to run on Steam Frame at launch, having already been available for PC VR since 2022.

Half-Life 2: VR Mod is a free modification that brings a VR version of Valve’s Source-based shooter to PC headsets. While it has been playable on PC VR for years, the project is intended to launch on Steam Frame once the platform is ready for it—though the Steam Frame itself still doesn’t have a concrete release date.

To use it on Steam Frame, players need their own Half-Life 2 Steam license; a family sharing license won’t be enough. Development for the mod targets Windows PCs with x86 processors, even though Steam Frame runs on an ARM-based Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip.

Why compatibility layers matter on ARM

Technically, Valve’s goal is demonstrated here: running an existing Windows x86 VR title on ARM hardware without a native ARM port. In this case, SteamOS provides the Windows functionality needed via Proton, FEX translates x86 program code into ARM64 instructions, and DXVK converts DirectX graphics calls into Vulkan equivalents.

Even with those translation layers in the middle, Half-Life 2: VR Mod is able to hit the Verified performance target. However, it’s still unclear how much overhead the translation introduces, and whether more demanding PC VR projects—especially ones without the same kind of optimization headroom—will achieve similar results.
