THQ Nordic Announces New Gamefound Crowdfunding for Gothic: A Shadow’s Quest

THQ Nordic used today’s showcase to bring attention back to Gothic: A Shadow’s Quest, highlighting what board-game fans should watch next. The company says a new crowdfunding drive for the project on Gamefound is set to begin on September 30.

Quick facts

  • THQ Nordic announced a new crowdfunding campaign for Gothic: A Shadow’s Quest on Gamefound.
  • The campaign is scheduled to start on September 30.
  • This will be the project’s second attempt to raise community funding.
  • The first campaign launched last year and saw 1,600+ backers contribute over €165,000.
  • That earlier round reached 332% of the original funding goal.
  • Creators delayed the project to incorporate major improvements based on community and other feedback.

This isn’t the franchise’s first community push. THQ Nordic previously tried to fund the same board-game project through crowdfunding last year, and while the result was strong enough to exceed its baseline objective, the company still chose to stop and return later.

During that first run, more than 1,600 people pledged over €165,000 in total, allowing the campaign to climb to 332% of its starting target. Despite the financial success, the project was paused so the team could take on board suggestions from both the community and other sources and restart with meaningful upgrades.

New rules, playtesting, and a closer link to Gothic

THQ Nordic says the extra time has been used heavily. In the previous month, the developers shared an initial shortened draft of the updated rules, and they also confirmed that game prototypes will be sent to a selected set of reviewers.

Those reviewers’ impressions are intended to be published before the September crowdfunding campaign begins, giving potential backers a clearer picture of how the game is shaping up right ahead of launch.

Over the past year, Gothic: A Shadow’s Quest has reportedly moved noticeably closer to the feel of Gothik. The team added a new playable class: the Novice of Fire Mages, alongside runic magic.

On the event side, the structure has been reworked as well. Hundreds of cards have been removed, but the number of actual events is said to be higher because they’ve been relocated into a new campaign book.

Importantly for players who want the world to react, the Górnicza Dolina (Mining Valley) is now designed to change based on what players do. For example, the creators note that provoking orcs too often can trigger new events in specific regions.

Faster turns and deeper balancing work

Beyond content changes, the team is also focusing on pacing. The developers reduced the number of tokens required during play, and they removed the tedious process of preparing separate combat scenarios.

THQ Nordic also frames the project as moving toward the final production phase. The studio is working to complete the new campaign, including NPCs and missions, after which the game will enter intensive testing to refine rules and balance.

Only once that cycle is finished will the mechanics of Gothic: A Shadow’s Quest be locked in for good—setting the stage for the renewed Gamefound campaign starting September 30.
