Quick refresher: the story premise that started it all

KonoSuba follows Kazuma Satou, a hikikomori and anime/manga/games otaku. After an attempt to save a girl leads to a road incident, he wakes up in the afterlife, where Aqua—described as a goddess handling those who arrive after death—offers him a path forward.

Rather than only being sent to paradise or reincarnated, Kazuma is given an alternative: being transported to a fantasy world to defeat the Demon King who is threatening that world’s balance, including the reincarnation cycle itself. After teasing him about the circumstances of his death, Aqua gives Kazuma a choice—he can take any ability or item he wants—only for Kazuma to deliver his own twist: “Then… I choose you.”

In the fantasy world, they begin from level 1 with no money and no special skills, building their adventurer careers through experience—until defeating the Demon King is the only real way back home.
