Changeable Guardian Estique Launches on PS5, Xbox Series, Switch, PC Aug 6, 2026
A new retro shoot ’em up built for the NES era is finally launching on modern hardware: Changeable Guardian Estique is coming to PS5, Xbox Series, Switch, and PC on August 6, 2026—after a run that first saw the game published on NES and Famicom cartridges in December 2024.
A NES and Famicom cartridge release, 40 years after Nintendo’s 8-bit era
In 2023, Japanese industry veterans formed a team to create the retro shooter they wanted to play. Their goal was to capture the spotlight on the NES in the same way earlier projects had shown what the Mega Drive could do—explicitly referencing the kind of legacy associated with Earthion, tied to Yuzo Koshiro and Makoto Wada. The project was developed under the studio banner of Cat Hui Trading and, by December 2024, it reached completion with a fresh release on NES and Famicom cartridges.
The team’s background includes work from M2, with Takayuki Komabayashi leading the project alongside former Compile staff. The music lineup is also notable, with Ayako Saso (Ridge Racer), Shinichi Sakamoto (Wonder Boy), and Shinji Hosoe (Zero Escape) among the credited composers.
Players and retro enthusiasts who examined the release have pointed to what they describe as both strong design and a technical achievement for the hardware: rich stage visuals, smooth action, huge boss fights, and no visible screen flicker.
How it plays: horizontal scrolling, two forms, and no classic power-ups
Changeable Guardian Estique is a horizontal-scrolling shooter with six stages inspired by major cities around the world. You control a transformable robot ship piloted by Mary and Kanon, and the core mechanic revolves around switching between two distinct modes on the fly.
- Chasseur: optimized for slipping through tight spaces thanks to reduced vertical collision
- Robot: focuses on mitigating damage tied to the environment and excels at health recovery
- Shield gauge: regenerates over time, making form switching a tactical decision rather than a simple upgrade path
- No conventional power-ups: the game avoids the usual power-up system
- Scoring: based on special attacks, adding additional depth
Modern release details: languages, gallery extras, rewind, and pricing
On August 6, 2026, Changeable Guardian Estique will be available for purchase on PS5, Xbox Series, Switch, and PC. The release includes both Japanese and English versions, with differences intended between the two in story elements and certain visuals.
Additional features are designed for modern players and retro fans alike. A Gallery mode will let you view artwork, including images from the instruction manual, the game box, and the cartridge materials. There will also be a rewind function, plus an option to apply a CRT-style visual filter to recreate cathode-ray display output.
The game’s price is set at €15.99, with a 20% launch discount available at release.
What to watch next
With the NES and Famicom cartridge version already out since December 2024, the key question for console and PC players is whether the “no flicker” technical claim holds up under modern presentation—and how well the two-form combat rhythm performs once more players get hands-on with the shield regeneration and the absence of standard power-ups.
