Deltarune Hopschef Bread Challenge Guide: Win Flowery Dollars Fast

Deltarune Chapter 5 is packed with optional detours for players who like squeezing extra value out of each area, and the Hopschef Bread Challenge is one of the most memorable of them. Hidden in the Garden, this mini-platforming test has Hopschef “tuning” a giant loaf of sourdough into a timed action challenge. Clear it successfully and you’ll earn Flowery Dollars, plus an exclusive healing item that also opens up one of the chapter’s best repeatable money routes.

Release & availability tracker

The Hopschef Bread Challenge is an optional encounter inside Deltarune Chapter 5. It’s not available right away—you’ll need to keep progressing until you receive the Petal Feather, and platforming becomes usable in the challenge area. After your first completion, the challenge remains permanently accessible for replays, with rewards scaling based on how fast you finish.

Where to Find Hopschef in Deltarune

Hopschef is one of Chapter 5’s standout NPCs, and you’ll find him in the Garden. He’s located to the right of the first room that introduces the giant scissors obstacle. Visually, he’s hard to miss: the energetic chef is constantly doing jumping-jacks next to an enormous loaf of sourdough bread.

If you bring the watering can into this room and water the bread, a small flower will sprout on top. It’s a tiny interaction, but it fits the Flower Kingdom’s playful tone.

The bread challenge doesn’t unlock immediately. You’ll need to keep moving forward in the story until you obtain the Petal Feather. Once platforming mode is available in this area, Kris can attack the giant loaf—triggering the Bread Challenge.

Even after you reach the Top of Castle, you can still return to the Garden room later. You can backtrack through the Ideal Diner or use the shortcut door, making it easy to revisit whenever you want to improve your run time.

How to Play the Hopschef Bread Minigame

The Bread Challenge is a timed platforming minigame. Your goal is to destroy ten floating dough pieces before the timer runs out. As soon as Kris enters the challenge room after striking the blue bounce flower near Hopschef, the countdown begins.

You have twenty seconds to clear every dough target. If you open Kris’s ACT menu, the timer slows down without fully stopping, giving you a bit more breathing room to plan your next movement if you’re struggling.

Your navigation depends heavily on the room’s bounce flowers. Yellow flowers propel Kris upward, while blue flowers can send you in different directions depending on how you attack and where Kris is positioned. Understanding how those launches behave is one of the fastest ways to tighten your clears.

On a first attempt, the room can feel chaotic, but after a few runs you’ll start memorizing the layout and the challenge becomes far more manageable.

Susie’s Doughbuster S action can break dough targets through walls. That means you can sometimes destroy awkward pieces without taking the longer path around them. Doughbuster S has a four-second cooldown, so timing it well can save seconds—especially if you’re tempted to use it too early.

If the timer expires before you’ve destroyed all ten dough pieces, the game responds with a joke: the bread gets brought “BROT back to life.” You can immediately try again with no penalty.

All Bread Challenge Rewards

Completing Hopschef’s bread challenge for the first time gives you the most valuable payoff. Ralsei heals the destroyed loaf into a TreeCake. After the nearby platswap statue is activated, you can pick up the TreeCake.

Like the SpinCake from earlier chapters, you can carry only one TreeCake at a time. That said, you can always earn another later by replaying the challenge after using the cake you currently have.

Because TreeCake is limited to a single carried unit, make sure you use your current TreeCake before heading back to Hopschef if you want to obtain another one.

Beyond the healing item, Flowery Dollars are what you’ll earn from repeat clears. The number of Flowery Dollars depends entirely on how quickly you finish the challenge.

Completion time Flowery Dollars reward Special note
15 seconds or faster 10 Flowery Dollars
12 seconds or faster 20 Flowery Dollars
8 seconds or faster 40 Flowery Dollars
Under 5 seconds 40 Flowery Dollars (as five F Dollar coins) Hopschef delivers exclusive congratulatory dialogue for the record-level clear

If you’re farming Flowery Dollars, it’s usually smarter to target consistent runs under eight seconds rather than trying to force under-five-second clears immediately. The faster you can reliably reproduce your time, the more stable your income becomes.

FAQs

Can you replay Hopschef’s Bread Challenge?

Yes. Once you complete it the first time, the Bread Challenge stays available permanently. Every later completion grants Flowery Dollars based on how quickly you finish.

How many Flowery Dollars can you earn?

The top payout is forty Flowery Dollars for clearing within eight seconds. Clearing in under five seconds also gives forty Flowery Dollars, but the reward is provided as five F Dollar coins instead.

TreeCake is repeatable, but you can only hold one at a time. After you use your current TreeCake, you can return to Hopschef to earn another.

Is the Bread Challenge required to finish Chapter 5?

No. It’s entirely optional. Still, it’s worth doing for the TreeCake, the Flowery Dollars, and the fact that it’s one of Chapter 5’s most fun platforming minigames.
