Palworld 1.0: Best Early Stat Order for Faster Leveling and Combat

Leveling up and improving your stats in Palworld matters almost as much as catching strong Pals. If you’re early in the game, a practical starting point is Stamina first, then Health. Once you’ve invested enough into both, shift toward Attack and Weight to make your character more effective both in fights and while managing your load outside of combat. Below, we’ll break down what every stat does, how it affects your play, and which one you should prioritize for leveling.

Release / availability & platform note

The source material focuses on gameplay progression and doesn’t include release dates, platform listings, or edition-specific availability. If you want, share the missing release/platform section and I can format it into a tracker-style layout.

Best stats to upgrade first in Palworld

I recommend leveling up Stamina first. In practice, it’s tied to just about every offensive and defensive action you’ll take—attacks, dodges, and general movement bursts. Stamina becomes especially noticeable during longer encounters: if your meter runs low mid-fight, you’ll have to back away and walk out of danger rather than continuing to dodge or roll through incoming pressure. Stamina is also what supports running, climbing, and gliding, which directly helps you move between biomes. When you’re low on Stamina early, exploring and traveling feel restrictive, so investing in it right away pays off. Aim to push Stamina up until you’ve put roughly ten upgrades into it—enough to support comfortable movement in the opening stages.

After that, go for Health to improve survivability. Health is one of the strongest early upgrades because it matters in every combat situation, and it’s supported by multiple items and equipment options that can further raise your HP. Stamina is different: aside from direct stat upgrades, there are far fewer ways to meaningfully increase it. That’s why Health should come right after Stamina—because you’ll soon run into tougher Pals and boss fights where getting hit is common. More Health means you can stay in the fight longer instead of getting forced out by sustained damage.

If you were to rank Palworld stats for upgrading, Stamina and Health would land in S-Tier. Attack and Weight follow in A-Tier: both are useful, just in different ways. Attack boosts the damage you deal during combat. Weight improves how much you can carry, which affects how often you’ll need to make trips back to your base. If your playstyle is heavy on hunting Pals, Attack can give you a clear edge in fights. If you spend more time gathering materials and keeping your base production running smoothly, Weight is the better call.

It’s also worth noting that Attack and Weight can be improved through regular gameplay, not only by investing stat points. For example, you can increase your damage by equipping higher-rarity weapons. The same concept applies to Weight: you can bring along Pals with helpful utility passives. Cattiva is one example, used to boost carry capacity, while Fuddler can reduce Stone Weight when you’re doing mining work.

Lastly, Work Speed isn’t a priority for most players. With Pals stationed around your base and out adventuring to help, a lot of labor will be handled for you. Even if Pals aren’t available, tools can cover the job regardless of how your character’s Work Speed is trending. For that reason, it’s better to avoid leveling up Work Speed.

How to upgrade defense in Palworld

Improving Defense in Palworld is different from the offense and survivability stats because you can’t raise Defense directly when you level up. Instead, Defense increases come from items and gear, or from Pals that bring Partner or Passive skills that boost your Defense.

As an example, accessories such as the Defense Pendant raise your Defense by 3. That increase is enough to translate into roughly a 200-point improvement in Defense. Armor is another major source of Defense. Because of that, keep upgrading your armor whenever you unlock a new tier.

Food can also raise Defense for both your character and your Pals. One example is the Herb Roasted Lamball dish, which increases Defense by 10%. To make it, you’ll need to hunt Lamball Pals, farm Berries, and use a Cooking Pot.
