How to Beat Juvenile Scavengers in Gothic 1 Remake as Level 1

In Gothic 1 Remake, even the first foes can end your run quickly, so learning the combat basics early is key. Here’s a practical breakdown of how to fight one of the opening threats—Juvenile Scavengers—as a Level 1 character, including weapon controls, dodging and blocking, and a simple plan to isolate and finish the dinosaur-like “chicken” enemy.

Combat Fundamentals

If you skipped the tutorial, you’ll likely be stuck testing attacks blindly. Let’s cover the essentials for how to fight effectively right away.

What you equip changes how you interact with the world. Whether you’re using your bare hands or a tool like a pickaxe, you’ll need to switch your active weapon. On controller, use the D-pad to choose your weapon, while on keyboard you’ll use the number keys.

On controller, each face button maps to a different attack direction. Pressing Square/X or Circle/B will make your character attack horizontally. Pressing Triangle/Y or X/A triggers a more vertical style of attack. On mouse and keyboard, left and right mouse clicks perform your horizontal swings, and the Q and E keys handle vertical attacks.

These Scavengers hit hard, so you can’t rely on offense alone—you’ll also need to dodge and block. Dodging can interrupt parts of enemy attack animations, so use it when you see an incoming strike. On controller, press R1 / Right Bumper to dodge; on keyboard, press Left Alt.

Blocking is done by holding defensive input: keep R2 / Right Trigger held on controller, or use Left Control on keyboard. This reduces the damage you take when an enemy connects. You can also improve your targeting by locking the camera onto nearby enemies—press in on the Right Stick on controller, or press Tab on keyboard.

Your attacks come out slowly, especially early when you’re holding a pickaxe. Against a Juvenile Scavenger, the basic goal is to create distance, wait for it to commit to an attack, and then land a single hit of your own.

When you’re new, it’s also important to avoid letting enemies pile up around you. If there’s more than one foe, fight them one at a time. With a group of Juvenile Scavengers, getting close should make one turn toward you and start squawking. After a few more seconds, it will begin running in to fight. Use the time after it notices you to back away from the rest of the pack and lure the individual away—then pull your weapon out and take it on separately.

How to Defeat a Juvenile Scavenger

You’ll recognize the Scavenger’s next attack as it closes in enough to stop chasing. Watch for the moment it rises taller, since the follow-up movement covers more space and is likely to catch you. Dodging sideways is a reliable way to get out of this sequence.

The pickaxe is the easiest weapon to find early, but it’s also slow. When you swing it, commit to just one strike and don’t attempt a second hit. Since the Scavenger can swing faster than you, trying for multiple attacks is a quick route to getting hit and losing a lot of health. After your single swing, back off to create space—either reposition carefully or dodge away.

Thankfully, these oversized “chickens” don’t have huge health pools. At Level 1, you’re about on par with the Juvenile Scavenger. If you can land a hit and then dodge away without taking damage, you can repeat the same rhythm until the enemy goes down. Typically, hitting it two or three times with a pickaxe is enough to defeat it.

After the fight, loot the Scavenger and heal up if you were damaged. With Juvenile Scavengers now in your toolkit, you should also grab the Old Sword located underneath the hanged man by the big tree—this is on your way down the hill from where you start the game. The Old Sword is far stronger than a pickaxe.

Molerats are another common early enemy. They can be slightly easier than Juvenile Scavengers because your strikes sometimes stagger them, but most other creatures or people you’ll encounter will be much harder to beat at Level 1. To get stronger early on, focus on completing smaller tasks and quests in and around camps.
