Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Smashes Steam Player Record in Hours

Just hours after Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced went live worldwide, it quickly climbed to become the most-played entry in the Assassin’s Creed series on Steam. Its early peak player total was several times higher than the original Black Flag release managed roughly 13 years earlier.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is an upgraded remaster of the 2013 game Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. The story takes place in the Caribbean during the Golden Age of Piracy, where you step into the boots of pirate captain Edward Kenway and get pulled into the long-running struggle between the Templars and the Assassins. Initial reactions to Black Flag Resynced are mostly positive, with the biggest differences tied to improved visuals and a range of quality-of-life tweaks that distinguish Ubisoft’s new version from the 2013 original.

While the launch looks strong, there’s also a darker note: many of the game’s developers have reportedly been laid off despite its apparent success.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Sets a Steam Series Benchmark

Even though Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is available across multiple platforms, the Steam release has already established a standout record for the franchise. Shortly after the game became available, the Steam version hit a peak concurrent player count of 99,451. That number has since dipped to under 77,000 players.

On Steam, Black Flag Resynced also surpassed the prior franchise record held by Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which reached a peak of 64,825 players during its early-2025 launch. In comparison, Black Flag Resynced’s peak Steam figure was also reported as six times higher than what the original 2013 Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag achieved.

Steam Deck Verified, With PC Requirements and an SSD Callout

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is marked Steam Deck Verified, indicating that players can bring its pirate-and-sail gameplay on the go. It also means the game is confirmed to work on the Steam Machine by default. Ubisoft notes that the game runs on the Anvil Engine, and the recommended PC specifications suggest it should be able to handle older hardware such as an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060.

However, Ubisoft’s requirements also include a specific hardware expectation: a solid-state drive (SSD) is required.

Steam Rating Is Mixed as Denuvo, Launcher Use, and DLC Pricing Draw Fire

Despite the impressive first-day numbers, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced currently sits at a mixed Steam rating of 67%, based on 949 English-language reviews at the time of writing. One likely contributor is the use of Denuvo anti-tamper DRM on PC, paired with the Ubisoft Launcher.

There’s also the question of downloadable content cost. Outside the standard edition, the game reportedly has nearly $85 worth of DLC available. Most of the DLC packs are cosmetic additions—specifically character and ship skins—that cost $9.99 each.

Reported Cutscene Frame-Limit Issue Could Affect Ongoing Player Retention

Beyond DRM and DLC pricing, some of the mixed reception may stem from technical problems reported by players. Ubisoft states on the game’s Steam page that Black Flag Resynced has a known issue where cutscenes are capped at 30 frames per second when certain graphical settings are configured to Ultra High.

Ubisoft’s team provided a temporary workaround and said a permanent fix would arrive in the following days. Even with plenty of side content available for players to dig into, it remains unclear how many will stick around after the initial launch window.
