The Sims Movie Update: EA and Amazon’s Latest Creative Hires and Production Plans
EA and Amazon MGM Studios are continuing to develop their long-awaited The Sims movie, with fresh momentum coming from key creative hires and production details. While plot specifics are still under wraps, the project’s director lineup and production team suggest the adaptation is aiming for a tone that feels true to the franchise’s comedy-forward chaos.
LuckyChap Entertainment is producing alongside EA and Amazon MGM Studios
LuckyChap Entertainment is on board to produce The Sims movie, alongside The Sims and Vertigo Entertainment (as part of the project’s producing team). The company is tied directly to Margot Robbie and her husband, Tom Ackerley, who founded the British-American studio in 2014 with Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr.
In the years since launch, LuckyChap has built a reputation through a run of major releases. Its first big hit, I, Tonya, became a standout commercial success, earning more than $50m on a relatively small budget. The studio also contributed to high-profile titles such as Birds of Prey, Barbie, and Promising Young Woman, among others.
LuckyChap continues to stack upcoming projects, and The Sims is among them. Robbie’s next film, Wuthering Heights, is set to arrive next year. Other announced projects associated with the studio include Bad Bridgets, Monopoly, Oceans, and Tank Girl.
Even with just a little over a decade in operation, LuckyChap has positioned itself as a seasoned production force, and the studio’s ongoing success is part of why this adaptation is drawing attention from both movie fans and players.
Kate Herron directs, with Briony Redman also attached
For a game-to-film adaptation, nailing the right creative leadership matters, and the current lineup for The Sims looks promising. EA and Amazon MGM Studios have brought in accomplished writer-director Kate Herron as both director and co-writer.
This is expected to be Herron’s first feature film. However, she has extensive experience across major television series, including Doctor Who, Sex Education, Loki, and The Last of Us. Briony Redman, who has collaborated with Herron on multiple projects, has also joined the The Sims movie team.
What the movie might look like: tone, universe, and possible roles
Since EA announced the film partnership over a year ago, concrete details about the plot, setting, and characters have been limited. Even so, fans have kept theorizing, with many hoping the movie leans into a light, playful vibe—similar to the energy audiences associate with Robbie’s Barbie.
The Sims is known for its humor, from wild outfits to iconic moments such as the Grim Reaper and the franchise’s famously absurd deaths. That has naturally led to questions about whether a notorious element like the “Deadly Pool Ladder” could show up in some form.
Robbie has appeared in multiple LuckyChap productions, including Terminal, Birds of Prey, and Barbie. No casting has been confirmed for The Sims, but the speculation is that she could play a major role in the film.
In terms of where the story could take place, one possibility is a fully virtual world built around The Sims itself. While placing the characters in a real-world setting could be an interesting twist, a more likely direction is a simulation environment—potentially created by a “SimGod,” aligning with how the franchise frames its universe.
Bridging a legendary franchise—and timing the release
The Sims is among the longest-running and best-selling game franchises ever. The first entry launched in 2000, and the series has continued for more than two decades, with The Sims 4: Adventure Awaits arriving over 25 years later.
Game-to-movie adaptations have struggled in the past to match the legacy players expect. Still, other recent adaptations have leaned into fidelity—an approach fans are also hoping to see with the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima movie, which is based on the PlayStation hit.
Making a film that truly respects what players love won’t be simple, but the The Sims movie is positioning itself as an “authentic Sims experience.” EA has reportedly wanted the movie to feel like playing the game, so expect nods to franchise touchstones and plenty of Easter eggs.
Development is currently ongoing for this The Sims movie, and it is not connected to the cancelled 2019 version. A 2026 release might arrive too quickly, though there’s a chance the movie could reach theaters around 2027.
The creator of this write-up has been covering sports and gaming for over a decade, with published work appearing through outlets including Cardiff City Football Club, the Hong Kong Jockey Club, and many other major websites.
