A Single Madman Walkthrough: Complete Sequence 3 Mission Guide

“A Single Madman” is the fourteenth mission in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Remastered’s Sequence 3, and it serves as the capstone for the chapter. The pirates are ready to settle in, but first you need to catch up with Julien du Casse and secure a new place for Edward and the crew to call home. This walkthrough covers the full route, practical takedown ideas, and the key items you can pick up while working your way through the area.

How to Start A Single Madman

To begin the quest, sail to Great Inagua. The mission objective is to assassinate Julien du Casse, though you can’t reach that goal immediately—you’ll need to locate him first. At this stage, the only clue you have is that du Casse is positioned north of the island.

From the Jackdaw, jump over to the island and head northwest. Climb up the wall to reach the broken bridge. After that, move south and leap between the beams to land on the next ledge. Keep climbing—first up the wooden structure, then up the wall—until you reach a platform where loot is waiting.

Turn toward the north and cross the beams and bridge again to climb to the next platform. From there, you’ll work your way upward until you’re inside a set of ruins.

Follow the northwest route, but expect resistance. Soldiers will appear along the way, and you can thin them out more safely by using bushes as cover while you move down the path.

There are also side routes that let you travel quietly above the guards. If you want to keep things efficient, bring the Rope Dart into play—hang soldiers as you advance so you can control the encounter without raising alarms.

Eventually the route splits. You can choose to head north or west, but both directions funnel back to the same location. No matter which path you take, you’ll arrive where soldiers are speaking to a prisoner lying on the floor near some crates.

Keep pushing north until you find a spot where you must slide under a tree. Then go east along the wooden bundle; from there, you should be able to spot a house in the distance. Jump across to the next platforms and follow the route until you reach a small soldier camp.

Clear the camp in whatever way fits your playstyle, then continue east. These soldiers are fairly unaware, so a fast approach can let you remove them stealthily.

Carry on east through the trees until you reach a stretch of yellow-tinted water. From there, head north across the trees toward the house.

At the far end of the branch near the house, stop to observe and tag as many soldiers as you can. Then approach in this recommended order:

  • Dive down into the leaves
  • Whistle or wait for the nearest guard to move in so you can take him down
  • Move northeast and jump through the broken window
  • Eliminate the guard inside, then before leaving, read the note by the sofa
  • Go into the left-side room and remove the guard near the portrait
  • Exit the door to the northeast
  • Loot the chest by the wheel
  • Circle around the building and return toward the west
  • Use bushes to drop the two soldiers patrolling
  • Attack the soldier stationed to guard the pirates
  • Release the prisoners and speak with them
  • They’ll assist you as you clear out additional soldiers along the way
  • While you’re here, grab the Viewpoint just behind them on the west side
  • After taking the Viewpoint, you can jump straight down into the water and swim over to reunite with the prisoners on the beach

Once the soldiers are dealt with, climb back onto the ship. The final step is taking down Julien du Casse.

If you end up fighting him directly, keep these points in mind:

  • The red barrels can swing the fight in your favor. Ignite them and lure du Casse close so you can maximize the damage.
  • Going straight at him is difficult. Instead of rushing, distract him first—then sneak up from behind.
  • Du Casse is fast and agile, so melee is usually a dead end. Favor ranged attacks when possible. Ammunition is available on the ship to help you replenish.
  • He fights at range and uses a warning cue: a loading indicator appears above his head and fills when he’s about to fire. He tends to shoot both pistols in quick succession, so dodge and roll out of the line of fire.
  • Smoke bombs are a strong tool for closing distance unnoticed, allowing you to sneak up on him.

After Julien du Casse is defeated, The Cove becomes Edward’s and the pirates’ home. You’ll be given a Templar Key, and the mission ends there. You’ll also unlock access to Naval Contracts and can jump straight into Sequence 4.
