Banjo-Kazooie Cauldron Keep Walkthrough: Klungo Rematch, Trivia, and Hag 1

Banjo-Kazooie’s Cauldron Keep is where the game starts testing not just your platforming, but your decision-making and your ability to multitask under pressure. This walkthrough segment takes you from the final leg of the prior challenge into Cauldron Keep’s sequence of gatekeeping tasks, a Klungo rematch, and the Tower of Tragedy trivia event—before escalating into Hag 1, the “Monstrous Mechanical Mud-Muncher” boss fight that blends shooting, camera-dependent aiming, and scripted question-and-answer pressure.

Checklists

With the checklist work done—items collected (or at minimum reaching the required Jiggy count)—you’re ready to move on to the next Challenge. The game expects you to return to Jiggywiggy’s Temple to trigger what comes next, so this is less a “new area discovery” moment and more a “you’ve prepped correctly” checkpoint.

Walkthrough Part 10: Cauldron Keep

Once you’ve secured everything (or at least collected 55 Jiggies), head back to Jiggywiggy’s Temple to start the next Challenge. You’ll get a tight 100-second window to solve the most demanding puzzle yet. Complete it, and the Master will force the gates open so you can access Cauldron Keep.

Return to the Quagmire region and look for the Claw Clamber boots balanced on top of a pipe near the edge of the level. From there, run up the vertical pipe using the footprints to reach Grunty’s fortress.

Getting into Cauldron Keep’s lower level requires a Split-Up sequence. Place each character on their correct buttons—this part is essentially testing whether you can coordinate positioning rather than rely on brute-force movement.

After that, you’ll need to cross the purple moat in two different ways: glide across with Kazooie, and use Sack Pack to cross with Banjo. Once both buttons are pressed, reunite and move inside.

Cauldron Keep is not a place that introduces brand-new items or moves. Instead, it focuses on set-piece fights and one standout mini-game: the Tower of Tragedy.

Boss Battle: Klungo – Career-Questioning Minion

This is the last time you’ll fight Klungo directly, though it’s explicitly not the last time you’ll meet him. His combat style returns with a familiar threat: potions used both to attack you by throwing them and to empower him with special states.

  • Green: Klungo becomes invisible. You can still damage him during this phase, and you’ll get a relatively clean opening right before he disappears.
  • Red: Klungo grows supersized and tries to collide with you. Stay clear of the attacks, then counter as soon as he’s finished.
  • Blue: Klungo summons copies. The “real” Klungo is the one that acts last—attack him to deal damage.

When Klungo hurls vials at you, you’ll need to adjust direction or jump to avoid the hits. He targets a point in front of you rather than directly at your current position. You must damage him three times to send him into early retirement.

After beating Klungo for the third and final time, he finally packs up and abandons his ungrateful witch boss.

Tower of Tragedy Trivia Challenge

The game swaps from a combat script to a trivia boss battle. Grunty, along with her two sisters Mingella and Blobbelda, asks questions in randomized order. It’s still “boss-like,” but the threat is your timing and accuracy rather than enemy patterns.

The rules are simple: buzz in to answer, but don’t buzz too early or you won’t see the full question. When you do buzz in, select one of three answers. A correct choice earns 3 points. If a contestant misses, another player can answer for 2 points. The lowest-scoring contestant gets “squished” and leaves the game.

Even if Banjo-Kazooie are the last remaining contestants, the challenge continues—so you can’t assume the endgame is automatic once the others are eliminated.

For an extensive set of questions and answers, the guide points you to the “Tower of Tragedy Trivia Answers” page.

After surviving Grunty’s trivia assault, Grunty grudgingly declares you the winner and uses her trivia console to blast off, leaving you behind.

Of course, the game isn’t actually done when the camera cuts—this is a fake-out. You’ll need to head back to Jiggywiggy’s Temple in Wodded Hollow to access the Keep’s upper level.

To play Jiggywiggy’s next Challenge, you must gather 70 Jiggies. If you have that amount, place all 20 puzzle pieces into the puzzle and return to the Keep; the previously blocked entrance will now open.

Once back in Cauldron Keep via the Quagmire entrance, go upstairs and prepare for the toughest fight. The game encourages cheats if you’re struggling: activate Homing Eggs, and potentially the Honeyback Cheat if you haven’t already.

Hag 1: Monstrous Mechanical Mud-Muncher

Your top-of-Cauldron Keep fight is against Grunty, but she’s backed by a massive drilling machine called Hag 1. Beating Hag 1 is part of the battle’s structure, not an optional complication.

Throughout the fight, Grunty keeps asking questions in the same spirit as Tower of Tragedy. Correct answers let her attacks continue at normal pace; incorrect answers make her attack quicker. Early on, Grunty reacts to whether you got it right or wrong. Later, the only confirmation is a chime sound.

Across the arena’s edge, ammo respawns. Between attack phases, Grunty drops a Honeycomb.

Like the earlier battles, the Hag 1 fight unfolds in stages, each with its own behavior. It starts with a pair of lasers sweeping across the floor. Jump over them, then shoot Eggs whenever Grunty pops her head out of the drilling machine.

Try different ammo types. If your aim is inconsistent, standard Blue Eggs are recommended because their rapid fire makes it easier to land hits while strafing. However, Blue Eggs deal 1 damage, while Fire and Ice Eggs deal 2 and Grenade Eggs deal 3.

Grunty has 100 total hit points, and you can only damage her when the camera shifts into first-person mode. The controls can feel awkward because strafing can reset your vertical alignment—especially if you aren’t using the original Nintendo 64 layout, where the C-Buttons handle strafing and aiming up/down. This becomes simpler if you’ve enabled the Homing Eggs cheat.

The core plan is to keep shooting Grunty (not the digger), strafe side to side to avoid her magic attacks, and do your best to keep the reticule lined up. Push through until you bring her down to 90 HP.

The fight then repeats similar stages with escalating variety. Grunty uses lasers and mortar cannons, and then more mortar cannons. Continue dodging, and keep hitting her during the first-person moments.

Eventually she realizes her guns aren’t landing enough. She switches the drills on and tries to bore you to death. Keep pelting her with everything you have until she’s reduced to 50 HP.

At 50 HP, the fight gets harder. Dodge her attacks, then switch to Clockwork Kazooie Eggs. When the Digger machine stops, hatch a Clockwork Kazooie Egg and guide it through the exhaust port on the back of the drilling machine. Avoid the enemies inside the machine’s belly, then detonate the bomb next to one of the two batteries.

After the first battery is destroyed, Grunty resumes asking questions. Keep up your pressure on her while you wait for the Digger to pause again. This time, guide another Clockwork Kazooie Egg into the Digger and blow up the remaining battery.

With the Digger disabled, Grunty must stop you using her own magic. Strafe away from the bolts and keep attacking. She eventually summons her “Minions.” Eliminate them as they appear, keep firing at Grunty, and continue strafing left to right to dodge her magic.

When Grunty drops to 15 HP, she releases a cloud of poisonous gas into the room. The battle’s structure is the same, but you now must reduce her HP faster to avoid suffocating. Once you bring her down to 1 HP, the gas clears. At this point, you also learn Gruntilda’s last name: Winkybunion.

Knowing she can’t survive another hit, Grunty unleashes her strongest magic. Hit her with a Grenade Egg (best range) or a Blue Egg (highest fire rate) right as the deadly magic is about to fire. If you’re late, the game’s over—though landing that final interruption earns the win. Congratulations: you’ve beaten the game.

The Hag 1 machine explodes, leaving only Grunty’s head behind for the final beat of the sequence.

Then it’s time for the ending cutscene. Banjo-Kazooie reunite with a magically resurrected Bottles, along with friends both old and new, including Klungo, in Bottles’ house.

The last scene shows a kickball game featuring a distinctive choice of ball.

One final “wahey!” and you’re out of here.

Naturally, if you haven’t finished everything and collected all Jiggies, there’s still plenty left to do. Use the guide’s interactive checklists to track down everything you missed.
