Donkey Kong 64 Collectathon Checklist: Golden Bananas, Shortcuts, and Fairy Tips
Donkey Kong 64 is built around collecting lots of small rewards, but the game’s “collectathon” loop is really about using each Kong’s distinct kit to hunt down five Golden Bananas per level. Here’s a structured look at the core checklists and practical tips that keep progression smooth—from shacks and moves to travel shortcuts, instruments, and the hidden fairy system.
Checklists
Donkey Kong 64 is a “collectathon” game. You’ll be gathering small bananas, Blueprints, big Golden Bananas, coins, special moves, fairies, and more.
Early on, you only control DK. As you move through the stages, you’ll locate and rescue the other four Kongs, then switch between them freely by hopping into Tag Barrels.
Each Kong comes with unique abilities that you must use to secure the five Golden Bananas per level for each character. The exact route to those five differs from level to level, but one of the five is always earned by grabbing a Blueprint and bringing it back to Snide’s shack.
To make tracking easier, this walkthrough assigns the Blueprint Golden Banana as “Banana 5.” Beyond that Golden Banana, Blueprints also have another purpose: they’re collected by a friendly weasel named Snide.
Shacks and Friends
The game includes four kinds of shacks, though not every shack type shows up in every level. They are:
- Cranky — Crafts potions for the Kongs that grant special abilities.
- Funky — Provides weapons and ammo upgrades for the Kongs.
- Candy — Supplies musical instruments and upgrades.
- Snide — Collects Blueprints gathered from each Kong, then hands over a Golden Banana in return.
Of course, the potions and weapons aren’t free. To pay for them, collect the color-coded Banana Coins scattered around stages. It’s smart to locate each hut as early as possible when starting a new level, because you never know when a new move offer will appear.
Even if a specific upgrade isn’t available yet, it’s still worth revisiting. Funky can refill your ammo, while Candy restores all music energy.
To clear a level at 100% with each character, you need to:
1. Gather 75 small bananas for a medallion. You don’t have to collect all 100 bananas, but the walkthrough still points out where every single one can be found.
2. Find a Blueprint by defeating a brute-like enemy type called a Kasplat, then return it to Snide for a Golden Banana.
3. Collect four additional bananas so you reach a total of five bananas per level for that character.
General Tips
Each Kong has its own set of melee options, including standing punches and kicks, spinning attacks while moving, and attacks while airborne. Those airborne hits can also help you extend your jump. On top of that, Kongs can crouch; if you run, crouch, and then jump, you can perform a far jump. There’s also a high jump option triggered by leaping from a crouch in the air. As you progress, additional special moves become available.
For movement across levels, you’ll use Bananaporters. These warp pads display a number, and each number has exactly one matching pad somewhere else in the same level.
To move faster, locate Bananaporters and activate them by touching the pads. Some stages include extra sets inside buildings—those versions only work within their sub-sections.
Play Your Instruments Often
As you advance, you’ll naturally gain more music energy. Still, you should start using the Kongs’ instruments early and often, because music functions like a “smart bomb,” clearing all enemies on screen.
This is especially useful against Zinger wasps, which can be tricky to land hits on, but it also helps with larger targets that are harder to defeat—like the Koshas, who fight with clubs. Even Kasplats are good instrument targets. These Blueprint-carrying foes are frequently positioned on platforms, and their shockwaves can knock you off if you aren’t careful.
Banana Fairies
Banana fairies are placed throughout the world. When you hear one giggling, scan the area—you’ll usually spot it surrounded by blue sparkles. You can take pictures of them, and doing so unlocks secrets (available from the main menu). In this guide, those secrets are covered in the Secrets section at the end.
Gold Crowns
Gold Crowns are earned by completing battle arena stages. Each stage has one crown, and some of them are limited to specific characters.
To enter an arena, look for metal hatches marked with K. Rool’s face.
Bonus Barrels
Bonus Barrels lead to extra challenges that pay out Golden Bananas for finishing them. If you fail, you can retry the challenge.
Banana Objectives
Every monkey has to collect five bananas in each level, along with five in the central hub. In the standard stages, turning a Blueprint in to Snide always secures the fifth banana. Blueprints are commonly found on Kasplat enemies whose hair matches that character’s small-banana color—for example, DK’s Kasplat has yellow hair, while Diddy’s has red.
Some banana objectives can be a little obscured and may not look immediately sensible. Still, every pad and window exists for a reason. If a room is visible, you can usually reach it; sometimes you just need the correct power to jump higher or float farther.
Occasionally you’ll run into translucent pads or barrels. These are also part of Golden Banana puzzles. If something appears see-through even when you’re controlling the right Kong for the face printed on it, that usually means you haven’t found the necessary power yet. Check back by visiting your friends in the shacks to see whether something is ready.
