Mass Effect 1 Discovery Guide: All Items, Locations, and Checklists

“Discovery” Assignments in Mass Effect 1 are a set of side-objectives built around tracking down items across the galaxy—things like resources, insignias, and written materials—while you explore with the Galaxy Map and scan/land on uncharted planets using the Mako. This guide section is designed to help you work through the full set of Discovery checklists, including how many targets exist versus how many you actually need to complete each Assignment.

Release & availability overview

This content is for Mass Effect 1 and its Discovery side-objective system: no matter which version you’re playing, the structure of planet-hopping, Mako scouting, and locating specific “Discovery” items remains the same. If you’re using the Mass Effect Legendary Edition, the guide can still help you track the same Assignment types, with the usual caveat that remastered versions may have minor UI or menu differences.

Checklists: Discovery Side Quests (and the 154-item goal)

Discovery Side Quests in Mass Effect 1 fall under the game’s Assignments, where you’re sent to locate a variety of collectible categories—resources, insignias, writings, and more. In this part of the guide, the aim is to help you find every single Discovery item, totaling 154 across the full set.

All Discovery Assignments

In total, there are six Discovery Assignment types in the game: “UNC: Asari Writings,” “UNC: Signs of Battle,” “UNC: Prothean Data Discs,” “UNC: Turian Insignias,” and “UNC: Valuable Minerals” (these are the categories you’ll be tasked with tracking down). Completing them generally follows the same routine: survey planets and other points of interest through the Galaxy Map, then land on uncharted worlds and search them in the Mako until you find the required items.

One important detail: each category has more targets in the world than you need for the Assignment. For instance, you can find sixteen Asari Writings, but you only have to collect ten to finish the “UNC: Asari Writings” objective. Still, many players choose to collect everything anyway—each discovery grants XP and Credits.

Discovery Assignments won’t show up in your Journal until you locate your first item from the relevant category. However, you can begin working on all of them as soon as you’ve finished “Citadel: Expose Saren,” even before you’ve found your first Discovery entry.

Before you start hunting, remember that the following regions—marked with an asterisk ( * )—must be unlocked first:

  • Grissom is unlocked during the Geth Incursions side quest.
  • Cacus and Plutus both depend on filling one of the two Morality Bars to 80%.
  • Maroon Sea doesn’t unlock until you complete Feros.
  • Styx Theta doesn’t unlock until you complete Noveria.
  • Columbia doesn’t unlock until you complete UNC: Cerberus.
  • Yangtze doesn’t unlock until you complete UNC: Missing Marines, after asking Kahoku about Banes.
