Mr. Terrific TV Spin-Off Reportedly Being Developed for the Expanding DCU
DC Studios is reportedly working on a television spin-off centered on Superman-adjacent hero and “superhero genius” Mr. Terrific, with the project positioned as a new corner of the DCU to watch as the slate continues to shift.
Mr. Terrific TV plans reportedly in the works
The newest update on what comes next for the DCU points to a quiet development effort tied to Mr. Terrific. The information is coming out alongside a broader wave of behind-the-scenes details connected to last week’s troubled comic book release, Supergirl.
Mr. Terrific, known as both a crime-fighting brainiac and a technology-focused powerhouse, previously made a live-action debut in the DCU’s first theatrical offering, Superman. In that film, the role was played by StartUp actor Edi Gathegi.
While Superman was directed by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, it’s still not clear how closely he’s expected to be involved in the Mr. Terrific television series itself.
Allan Heinberg reportedly attached behind the scenes
At the moment, the series details remain minimal, suggesting the show is still in early development. Even so, it appears DC Studios and Warner Bros. already have at least one key creative name lined up for the project.
- Allan Heinberg is reportedly attached to the Mr. Terrific TV show.
- Heinberg is widely recognized as the showrunner and writer for Netflix’s short-lived The Sandman series.
- He also contributed as a writer on Wonder Woman.
- His credits include work on multiple episodes of The O.C. and Grey’s Anatomy.
Heinberg’s experience in live-action superhero storytelling is expected to matter as DC Studios continues assembling the pieces for what’s next.
What’s confirmed about the cast, and how the DC slate is shaping up
One casting expectation is already floating around: it sounds like Gathegi will return as Mr. Terrific for the television series. However, information about the show’s plot, additional cast members, and even a release window has not been officially confirmed yet.
Meanwhile, the DCU’s momentum is being tested following turbulence that picked up after Supergirl in late June. The Milly Alcock-led film landed with mixed reviews and disappointing opening-weekend performance, which has fueled projections suggesting Warner Bros. could end up losing more than $100 million.
DC’s live-action schedule: what’s next after Supergirl
Even with the recent setbacks, the broader DCU lineup is still described as moving forward. Several upcoming live-action projects have dates attached, including:
- Lanterns, a Green Lantern television series, is currently scheduled to premiere in August.
- Clayface, a Batman spin-off with a body-horror angle, is set to hit theaters in October.
- Man of Tomorrow, a follow-up Superman story, is planned for next July.
As for how the Mr. Terrific series will take shape, that part remains unclear. Still, Gathegi is at least expected to reprise his role as Mr. Terrific in Man of Tomorrow, even as the standalone TV plans continue to develop.
