ZeniMax Online Director Nick Giacomini Reassures ESO Players After Layoffs
Microsoft’s recent layoffs hit multiple game teams, and The Elder Scrolls Online developer ZeniMax Online was among the hardest affected. With reports that roughly half of the studio’s staff was let go, the project’s director Nick Giacomini has now moved to reassure players—while also confirming that several major planned additions are being pushed back.
Director addresses the layoffs and what they mean for ESO
In an article posted on the official The Elder Scrolls Online project site, Giacomini directly addressed growing concern about how the staffing cuts might affect the MMORPG’s future. He stated that ESO “will remain,” and that the team is fully committed to the game’s future. He also said the studio’s priorities have not changed, emphasizing continued development of The Elder Scrolls Online and expansion of the world that many players consider their home.
The studio also announced leadership changes: Giacomini and veteran ZeniMax Online producer Josh Henderson were named as the new heads of the studio.
New studio leadership and closer Bethesda collaboration
Giacomini also highlighted organizational changes aimed at improving how the MMORPG is developed. ZeniMax Online will now work more closely with Bethesda as part of this updated setup, with the goal of strengthening ESO development going forward.
What’s delayed: several major features pushed to 2027
While Giacomini’s message is meant to calm fans, the same communication included a clear downside: a set of expected features is being delayed. An ordered list in the announcement outlines what is now planned for later than previously targeted.
Delayed ESO items
- Crimson Veldt, along with Update 52, is now expected in 2027.
- Class and combat system refresh is also pushed to 2027.
What ESO has scheduled for the rest of this year
Despite the 2027 shift for several major additions, the announcement still sets specific dates for upcoming content. The remainder of the year is described as “fruitful” for players, centered on Update 51 and the next event season.
Confirmed release dates
- Update 51 launches September 28, which is one week later than originally planned.
- Return of the Thieves Guild (Season 2) begins on October 21.
- The second season includes two new dungeons designed for solo players.
ESO future message: commitment, but timelines are changing
Giacomini’s core takeaway is that The Elder Scrolls Online is continuing with the same overall focus, even as the team has been reshaped. At the same time, the confirmed delay of Crimson Veldt, Update 52, and a broad class and combat refresh to 2027 makes it clear that the layoffs will have measurable effects on the game’s development schedule.
