Wales’ Winless Run Hits Five After Nations League Loss to Portugal
Wales were beaten 1-0 by Portugal in Lisbon after João Félix’s long-range shot deflected off Ben Davies and left Danny Ward unable to recover, extending Craig Bellamy’s side’s winless sequence to five internationals in 2026.
Portugal controlled lengthy periods of the UEFA Nations League contest and created a number of promising openings, although they were unable to add to the decisive goal. Félix’s effort underlined the hosts’ quality in the final third, with the change of direction proving enough to beat Ward.

Ampadu sees room for improvement
Wales captain Ethan Ampadu accepted that Portugal’s individual standard had made the evening difficult, but felt the visitors had shown encouraging moments with the ball.
“We knew it would be a difficult match against a very good side with a lot of quality, and they showed that at times,” Ampadu said. “We expected to have to suffer, but we came here wanting to make a statement and have an impact. There were moments when we showed what we can do in possession, though we know we can do more.”
The Leeds United midfielder pointed to Wales’ late opportunities as evidence of their persistence, while acknowledging the frustration of another defeat.
“The work rate will always be there, as it has been for many years,” he said. “We had a couple of chances near the end which could have brought a goal and changed the feeling. Losing is never enjoyable.”
Ampadu also highlighted Portugal’s ability to decide tight matches from limited openings. “They showed why they challenge for the biggest honours,” he said. “Give them half a chance and they can score.”
Denmark test next for Wales
Bellamy’s squad now travel to Copenhagen to face Denmark on Sunday, September 27, with a positive result needed to avoid falling further behind at the bottom of their Nations League group.
Portugal, managed by Jorge Jesus, also play away from home on the same date when they visit Norway. They head into that fixture with maximum points from their opening match.
