The 23-year-old had been in line to start against Hull as Matthias Jaissle dealt with a mounting list of absentees at St James’ Park. Instead, Livramento felt discomfort following the final training session and was withdrawn from contention.
Jaissle said the defender would be assessed through a scan, adding: “He suffered discomfort after training. He will have an MRI scan but that’s all from my side.”
The problem comes shortly after Livramento returned to Newcastle’s matchday group. A calf injury had ended his hopes of featuring at the 2026 World Cup, and his comeback had been limited to two substitute outings: a one-minute appearance in the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth and 32 minutes during the 4-1 loss at Leeds United.
Newcastle nevertheless overcame Hull 2-1, taking their Premier League total to eight points.
Alexander-Arnold returns to England squad
Livramento’s situation has emerged after England recalled Trent Alexander-Arnold for the forthcoming UEFA Nations League matches. The Real Madrid defender, 27, had already been selected by Thomas Tuchel before the Newcastle player’s fresh issue.
Alexander-Arnold missed the World Cup squad and watched England finish third, but has made three starts for Real Madrid in the early part of the La Liga season. His most recent England appearance came in June 2025, when he came on as a substitute in a 1-0 victory over Andorra.
England’s next international window begins with the visit of World Cup holders Spain to Wembley on Saturday, September 26. Tuchel’s side then face the Czech Republic away on September 29, travel to Croatia on October 3, and host the Czech Republic again on October 6.
What remains to be decided
The extent of Livramento’s injury, and whether it will affect his availability for Newcastle or England, will not be known until the MRI results are reviewed.
