Solanke’s Late Goal Extends Manchester United’s Winless Run
Manchester United’s draw with Tottenham has intensified scrutiny on Michael Carrick’s side after Dominic Solanke struck a stoppage-time leveller for the visitors, who played with 10 men. The result stretched United’s run without a victory in all competitions to four matches.
Old Trafford made its frustration clear, with supporters booing at the interval and again after the final whistle. United are 12th in the Premier League and now face two demanding away assignments in quick succession.
Quick facts
- Tottenham’s Dominic Solanke scored late to deny United a home win.
- United have not won in four games in all competitions.
- Carrick’s team sit 12th in the Premier League.
- Atletico Madrid await in Spain in the Champions League on Tuesday.
- United then visit Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday.
Gary Neville has identified the midfield partnership of Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo as a central concern. The former United captain believes the pair have individual quality but have not produced the required athleticism or balance together.
Neville said he had seen enough to doubt whether the combination was sufficiently dynamic for Premier League football at United, while stressing that he was not definitively ending the experiment. In his view, some capable players simply do not naturally complement one another.
The Tottenham match offered Neville a possible alternative. Carlos Baleba’s introduction alongside Mainoo brought greater energy, he said, and United may need a personnel change in that area.
There was also a wider warning for the squad before the next fixtures. Neville said the players must respond physically and mentally, with Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid followed by the intensity of a trip to Elland Road.
United have only a short recovery period before Tuesday evening’s Champions League match in Madrid. A Premier League meeting with Leeds follows on Sunday, leaving Carrick little time to correct a slide that has already tested the patience of the Old Trafford crowd.
