Senne Lammens urges Manchester United response at Atlético after Spurs draw

Manchester United travel to Atlético Madrid on Tuesday seeking an immediate response after conceding a stoppage-time equaliser against Tottenham, goalkeeper Senne Lammens has said.

United were held 1-1 at Old Trafford on Saturday despite playing against 10 men following Rodrigo Bentancur’s dismissal. Bryan Mbeumo had given Michael Carrick’s side the lead, but Dominic Solanke levelled in added time and boos followed at the final whistle.

Quick facts

  • Manchester United drew 1-1 with Tottenham after leading against 10 men.
  • Bryan Mbeumo scored United’s goal; Dominic Solanke equalised in stoppage time.
  • United have six points from six Premier League matches, their poorest opening since 1986.
  • Tuesday brings a Champions League trip to Atlético Madrid.
  • United then visit Leeds on Sunday before another European away match against Como.

The result has intensified pressure on Carrick, with last season’s third-place finish and return to the Champions League now a distant memory. United’s opening six league fixtures have yielded only six points.

Lammens said the dressing room had been left frustrated by losing control of a match they had put themselves in position to win. He said United must learn how to see out such games if they are to produce a successful season.

“You get the advantage and go 1-0 ahead against 10 men,” Lammens said. “That is where you want to be, so to concede at the end is very disappointing.”

He added that the packed fixture list gives United a chance to replace the disappointment quickly. Atlético are next in Europe before the Premier League meeting with Leeds and the subsequent trip to Como.

“You can carry the disappointment with you, or you can change it quickly because another game is coming,” Lammens said. “If I have not had my best game, I want the next match to remove that sour feeling. That has to be the mentality.”

The goalkeeper said United should retain confidence from aspects of their display against Spurs, while correcting the mistakes that cost them two points. He stressed that the squad had worked hard last term to earn Champions League football and must now deliver in the competition if it is to progress.

Defensive shortcomings remain a pressing concern. United have not kept a clean sheet in the Premier League this season, and Solanke’s late header came after Sandro Tonali’s cross was allowed into the area before Lisandro Martinez was unable to prevent the finish.

Lammens rejected the idea that the goal should be pinned on one individual. He said Carrick has repeatedly demanded collective defending, including stronger pressure on crosses.

“It does not begin with just one mistake,” Lammens said. “It is a team matter. The manager has emphasised defending together and putting pressure on opponents, especially when they cross.”

“It was better against Tottenham, but one quality delivery and one good header can take the win away from you. That is what happened.”
