Riemer Declines to Speculate on Eriksen as Denmark Injury List Grows

Denmark begin their UEFA Nations League campaign in Oslo on Thursday with Brian Riemer unwilling to speculate on Christian Eriksen’s career, while a growing injury list has removed several experienced players from his plans.

Riemer leaves Eriksen decision to the player

Eriksen remains outside the Denmark squad as he continues his rehabilitation following his collapse against Ukraine in June. The midfielder’s future has been discussed publicly after Wolfsburg manager Tobias Strobl suggested that retirement could be an option for the 33-year-old.

Riemer declined to offer his own view on whether Eriksen should continue playing, stressing that the decision is personal and that any statement on the matter must come from the player himself.

“He is entitled to say that, but it is not how I would put it,” Riemer said. “I do not believe it is Brian Riemer’s place to hold an opinion on what Christian Eriksen should do as a person. At some point, I expect Christian will make an announcement about what he wants.”

The Denmark coach maintained that Eriksen remains an outstanding footballer. Riemer said his responsibility will be to assess the playmaker’s football position only after Eriksen has made his intentions clear.

Dolberg injury adds to Denmark absences

Kasper Dolberg has been ruled out for Denmark’s next four fixtures after suffering an injury alone during training. Riemer said the striker landed awkwardly, with the immediate assessment making clear he could neither finish the session nor be available for the international window.

“Kasper landed awkwardly in training. It was an incident on his own,” Riemer said. “We all knew in that moment that he could not carry on and would not be fit. I am hugely disappointed that we now have to manage without him.”

Rather than dwell on the absences, Riemer has looked to reshape his selection for the League A Group 4 opener against Norway. Lucas Hogsberg, Anton Gaaei and Mohamed Daramy have been brought into the squad as Denmark seek solutions before the trip to Oslo.

The Red and Whites will then host Wales later this month. Denmark are aiming to extend their strong historical record against Norway despite entering the Nations League with injuries affecting key players in defence, attack and goal.
