Real Madrid Monitor Virgil van Dijk as Liverpool Contract Nears Final Year
Real Madrid are monitoring Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk as the Dutch centre-back approaches the final year of his Anfield contract, with his deal due to run until the summer of 2027. The 35-year-old has not yet received a formal proposal to extend his stay, raising the possibility that he could eventually become available without a transfer fee.
Madrid view that scenario as one worth exploring. The club have increasingly targeted established players whose contracts are running down, allowing them to add experience and depth while avoiding major transfer outlays. Van Dijk’s standing in the game, his leadership and his ability to operate immediately at the highest level make him an attractive short-term option for the Santiago Bernabeu side.
Their interest has been strengthened by the arrival of Ibrahima Konate from Liverpool earlier this summer on a free transfer. A move for Van Dijk would reunite the former Anfield defensive partners in Madrid, offering an existing understanding in central defence as Jose Mourinho seeks to keep the club competitive in Spain and Europe.
Defensive planning behind Madrid interest
Madrid’s thinking is also shaped by uncertainty surrounding Antonio Rudiger, whose own contract is moving closer to its end. Van Dijk would offer a proven replacement capable of adapting quickly to the demands of a side expected to challenge for every major honour.
Van Dijk finished runner-up in the 2019 Ballon d’Or vote and has collected the leading trophies available during his Liverpool career. Although he would be 36 by the time a 2027 switch could take place, Madrid believe his positioning, authority in the air and physical strength could still make him a valuable addition.
Barcelona, meanwhile, are not expected to pursue the defender despite his name having been considered as a possible answer to their own needs at centre-back. Hansi Flick is understood to favour a younger squad profile and is concerned that bringing in an established veteran could reduce opportunities for academy players emerging from La Masia.
For now, Van Dijk’s situation remains dependent on Liverpool’s next move. Madrid are positioning themselves to act should negotiations over a new contract fail to develop.
