PSV captain Mauro has received his first senior Brazil call-up after a strong start to the Eredivisie campaign, with the 27-year-old set to join Carlo Ancelotti’s squad following Sunday’s trip to Twente.

Mauro has become an increasingly important figure in Eindhoven, stepping into captaincy responsibilities after Jerdy Schouten suffered a serious knee injury. The Brazilian, who has been with PSV since January 2018, has started each of the club’s first six league matches this season.

His leadership and form have helped PSV reach the top of the Eredivisie on 16 points, following five victories and one draw. The 4-1 win over Sparta completed a notable week for a player whose versatility has also strengthened his international case.
Although predominantly used at left-back, Mauro has also played in midfield and has earned recognition despite the depth of Brazil’s options. He described the selection as an unexpected honour, saying he was delighted to be chosen but understood the difficulty of breaking into a squad containing so many high-level players.
Mauro said his first reaction was to contact his wife after learning of the decision. He also credited his PSV team-mates for their contribution to his progress.
For now, his attention remains on PSV’s away match against Twente on Sunday, September 20. Mauro said he wants to win the final fixture before the international break before fully turning his focus towards Brazil.
Brazil schedule after Twente
After PSV’s league assignment, Mauro will join Ancelotti’s 26-man travelling group for friendlies against Australia in Townsville and Brisbane later this month. His first senior Brazil window is due to finish with a trip to Kolkata to play India in the opening week of October.
