Aubameyang Header Keeps Deportivo Unbeaten in La Liga Start
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s 78th-minute header earned Deportivo La Coruña a 1-1 draw at Getafe and kept the promoted club unbeaten through five La Liga matches. The 37-year-old met Yeremay Hernández’s cross after Ramón Terrats had put the home side ahead, extending an extraordinary scoring run at the start of Deportivo’s return to the top flight.

Aubameyang has now scored in each of the opening five rounds of the La Liga season, becoming the first player to achieve that sequence since Zlatan Ibrahimovic in 2009. His fifth goal also moved him within one of Walter Pandiani’s Deportivo record for the strongest scoring start to a campaign, with Pandiani having reached six.
The equaliser came after Deportivo had been punished in open play by Terrats’ opener. Yet the visitors stayed in the contest and found their reward late on, with Hernández supplying the delivery for Aubameyang to guide his header beyond the Getafe goalkeeper.
Navarro praised the forward’s influence, describing Aubameyang as a player of elite quality whose current form has given the side a major attacking reference point. He said the squad are working to create as many scoring opportunities as possible for the striker and hoped the forward could continue finding the net every matchday.
The captain also highlighted Aubameyang’s physical condition and daily standards in training, saying his work ethic has set an example for Deportivo’s younger players. Aubameyang’s contribution has been particularly significant given his involvement in seven of the club’s nine league goals so far, through five strikes and two assists.
Navarro felt Deportivo had periods in the second half when they looked capable of turning the match around completely. He said the side became more comfortable when they could move the ball through Getafe’s first defensive line, and believed the response after conceding showed the determination required in the division.
Deportivo’s unbeaten opening has provided encouragement after their promotion, although Navarro acknowledged the scale of the challenge facing a club back in La Liga after a lengthy absence. Getafe, he noted, are difficult opponents at home and proved hard to break down, while the visitors were still disappointed not to leave with all three points.
Antonio Hidalgo’s team will look to extend their positive start when Sevilla visit on Wednesday, September 16. Aubameyang needs one more goal in that fixture to equal Pandiani’s six-goal club benchmark for the opening phase of a Deportivo season.
