Pokemon GO Fest 2026 Guide: Mega Mewtwo Raids, Genetic Mastery & More
Pokemon GO Fest: Global runs from July 11 at 10:00 a.m. until July 12 at 7:00 p.m., but the event is anything but a one-track affair. Trainers can jump into Raid Battles to gather energy needed to Mega Evolve Mewtwo into Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y. Alongside that, there’s a free research quest called Genetic Mastery, where you pick between two branches that both guarantee a Mega Mewtwo encounter—one path leads to X, the other to Y.
There’s also a separate Special Research called A Thunderous Discovery, which tasks you with completing eight steps to meet Zeraora. Zeraora is the Mythical Thunderclap Pokemon introduced in Generation 7 through Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.
If you want the full breakdown of what to do during Pokemon GO Fest: Global 2026, here’s a complete guide to the bonuses, research, raids, and field tasks.

How to Get Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y (Genetic Mastery)
Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y show up in Super Mega Raids on both Saturday and Sunday. To Mega Evolve your Mewtwo, you’ll need Mega Energy, which you earn by defeating Mega Mewtwo X/Y in Raid Battles.
Mewtwo you catch from Mega Mewtwo X raids will know Counter, while Mega Mewtwo Y raids reward Mewtwo that knows Psystrike. As usual for Mega raid legendaries, both forms also have shiny variants available in Pokemon GO.

Should You Choose Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y?
For battling, Mega Mewtwo Y is often treated as the community favorite. Being a pure Psychic setup, it follows the original Mewtwo concept while boosting its attack profile and key stats like Special Attack, Special Defense, and speed. The trade-off is weaker defense, giving it a more glass-cannon style—though it remains fast and surprisingly sturdy.
