Noahkai Banks Commits International Future to Germany Over USA

FC Augsburg defender Noahkai Banks has chosen Germany over the United States at international level, with the German Football Federation confirming that the 19-year-old has agreed a route through its national-team set-up.

The decision ends a prolonged contest for a player eligible for both countries and leaves the United States with one fewer option in an area of the squad that is short of centre-backs. Mauricio Pochettino had continued to describe Banks’ situation as unresolved as recently as last week.

Banks moved to Europe when he was seven weeks old and developed through Augsburg’s academy before establishing himself in the senior side. His previous youth appearances for the United States mean the change cannot be completed solely through the DFB announcement.

He must submit a one-time change of association to FIFA. The governing body’s international-switch register had not shown the application as processed on Friday, although approval would clear Banks to join Antonio Di Salvo’s Germany Under-21 group.

Di Salvo said Germany had been pursuing both Banks and Ben Farhat for some time, with the pair viewed as important additions to the youth ranks. “We had been in touch with both for a while and put a lot of focus on them,” he said.

The Germany Under-21 coach added that the federation had presented each player with a future plan and was pleased they had accepted it. Ben Farhat, a Tunisian dual national, plays for Karlsruher SC.

Banks had appeared close to committing to the American programme after the Under-17 World Cup. In February, he spoke positively about his experience around the senior national side, highlighting the welcome he received from Christian Pulisic and Tim Weah.

However, he declined a United States camp call in March. Pochettino then said the staff remained in contact with eligible dual nationals, stressing the importance of maintaining those relationships.

Germany’s confirmation now gives a clear direction to Banks’ international career, subject to FIFA’s administrative approval. Once the switch is authorised, he will be eligible for Di Salvo’s Under-21 selection rather than future United States teams.
