Mourinho Compares Calciopoli Punishments to Barcelona’s Negreira Investigation
Jose Mourinho used his return to the Stadio Olimpico for a Champions League league-phase match to contrast Italy’s response to Calciopoli with the continuing investigation into Barcelona’s payments linked to former refereeing official Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira.
Key details
| Item | Date or figure | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Calciopoli investigation | 2006 | Italy’s match-fixing case reshaped Serie A |
| Negreira’s refereeing role | 2001-2018 | Vice-president of Spain’s technical committee of referees |
| Mourinho’s Roma departure | Early 2024 | His first return to the Olimpico since leaving the club |
Mourinho praised the Italian authorities for their handling of the scandal that transformed Serie A two decades ago, arguing that Calciopoli was treated with the seriousness its name implied. He said Spain had yet to reach a comparable conclusion over the allegations surrounding Barcelona.
The case concerns sizeable payments from Barcelona to a company owned by Negreira, who held a senior position within the Spanish refereeing structure from 2001 until 2018. Barcelona have repeatedly denied committing any wrongdoing, but the payments have drawn sustained criticism from rival figures across Spanish football.
Mourinho said the absence of decisive consequences would leave the sport facing an unprecedented issue. In his view, if no action follows, the matter could be regarded as football’s largest alleged referee-corruption scandal.
An emotional night in Rome
The remarks came before Mourinho’s first appearance at Roma’s home ground since his exit in early 2024. His time in the Italian capital included the club’s first Europa Conference League title, followed by a run to the Europa League final in the following season.
Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini accepted that Mourinho remains deeply popular among the club’s supporters. Gasperini said the former Roma manager had earned the appreciation he would receive, while insisting the home crowd would turn its full attention to backing Roma once the match started.
The fixture arrives during the Champions League league phase, where the value of each point is heightened. UEFA is monitoring developments in Spain and has received a substantial body of material from Madrid connected to the investigation into Barcelona’s conduct.
