Lacey leads the current academy queue

He said the coaching staff tend to include larger training groups, allowing younger players to become accustomed to first-team standards and personnel.

Simpson identified Lacey as being ahead of the other youngsters at present, while also naming Kai Rooney and Gabriel as players who will train around the senior set-up before opportunities arrive.

Cup fixtures could create openings

United’s meeting with Brighton on Wednesday carries immediate importance in the Carabao Cup, but Simpson also views domestic cup football as an important platform for academy prospects. He recalled that home ties against less demanding opposition could offer a manager the chance to introduce young players for the final 20 minutes.

Brighton may not be the ideal fixture for that type of experimentation, Simpson said, but advancing in knockout competitions can produce later matches in which peripheral members of the squad are given meaningful minutes.

Gabriel is one of the most closely watched names in United’s youth ranks. The 15-year-old, nicknamed “Kid Messi”, was restricted by Premier League regulations last season and could not make his first-team debut. He did, however, feature under Carrick during pre-season preparations for the 2026-27 campaign.

There is growing expectation that senior action may not be far away for Gabriel. Rooney is another highly rated forward being monitored, with comparisons drawn to his record-breaking father’s profile as a goalscorer.
