Gotham FC Stay Top as Boston Legacy and Denver Summit Shake Up NWSL Race

Gotham FC restored momentum at the top of the NWSL with a 2-1 victory over Racing Louisville, but a weekend of tight results and late drama left the postseason race far from settled. With six matches remaining for every side, Boston Legacy’s 3-0 win at Washington Spirit and a six-goal draw between Denver Summit and Angel City added further pressure across the table.

Gotham lead as the chase remains crowded

Gotham moved back into the win column on Friday, beating Racing 2-1 to remain first on 48 points. Jaedyn Shaw scored for Gotham and Gia Reiten registered her first goal for the club, helping the Bats respond after their defeat a week earlier had ended a 10-match unbeaten sequence.

Louisville had fallen behind inside eight minutes before Kayla Fischer levelled the contest. The result nevertheless left Racing in 14th place on 23 points, with their season-long difficulties in front of goal still a major obstacle in the push for a playoff position.

North Carolina Courage were also beaten, losing 2-1 at San Diego Wave. Ashley Sanchez scored the Courage goal, while Gia Corley and Mel Barcenas found the net for San Diego. The Wave climbed into fourth with 42 points, while North Carolina remain well placed to make a late run towards the playoffs.

Boston’s late surge shocks Washington

Boston produced the most emphatic result of the round, winning 3-0 away to Washington Spirit at Audi Field. The match was goalless until the final stages, with all three Legacy goals arriving after the 80th minute.

Amanda Gutierres delivered the decisive late contribution, scoring in the 94th and 96th minutes to complete her brace. The result gives Boston fresh encouragement despite their current position of 13th, while Washington must regroup before hosting Chicago Stars on Sunday.

Utah Royals also collected an important 1-0 win, overcoming Houston Dash through Mina Tanaka’s second-half finish. Houston did not record an attempt on target and have now lost four consecutive matches, with three of those defeats ending 1-0.

The Dash made significant changes following the setback. Head coach Fabrice Gautrat was dismissed, technical director Twila Kilgore left her role, and Jaime Frias took interim charge. Houston are 12th and have six fixtures in which to revive their attacking output and build momentum.

Draws keep playoff contenders within reach

Denver and Angel City shared six goals in a 3-3 match, with Lindsey Heaps among the Summit scorers. Denver’s position in 10th means a handful of further positive results could prove decisive in their first NWSL campaign.

Angel City had three different players score and showed their growing attacking rhythm, although they remain ninth and still have work to do to advance through the standings.

Orlando Pride and Kansas City Current also drew 2-2. Barbra Banda scored for Orlando, taking her return to 16 goals in 20 appearances and keeping her second in the Golden Boot race. Orlando recently secured Banda’s future through 2029, but will require more regular goals from elsewhere in the squad.

Kansas City’s draw came in a week that included sporting director Vlatko Andonovski’s departure. Chris Armas remains the team’s head coach, with the Current still in the playoff positions but needing more victories over their final six games.

Seattle Reign beat Bay FC 2-0 to inflict Bay’s 13th loss of the season. Seattle are eighth and have scope to improve their seeding, while Bay continue to search for consistency despite changes and young talent within the squad.

Portland held as every point gains value

Portland Thorns were held 1-1 by Chicago Stars, a draw that did little to alter either side’s immediate outlook. Portland’s only goal came via a Chicago own goal, and the Thorns now sit sixth. Chicago earned credit for taking a point from a strong opponent but remain far from the playoff picture at the foot of the table.

The weekend’s results ensured that few clubs gained clear separation. Gotham retain the Shield advantage, San Diego strengthened their place near the top four, and Boston’s late statement in Washington offered another reminder that the final six rounds could still reshape the playoff field.
