Messi Joins Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Brand New Day Trailer Swing Scene
Lionel Messi has made a surprise cameo in the newest trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, appearing as the World Cup-winning football icon swings through Manhattan alongside Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.
The short clip dropped today as the World Cup moves through its knockout phase, adding another layer of mainstream sports star power to the superhero’s marketing push.
Early in the trailer, Peter Parker is seated in a café on the phone when a highly recognizable figure walks in. It’s Argentine football legend Lionel Messi. After Peter stumbles over his own excitement, he tells Messi he recognizes him. “Si,” Messi responds—but the real question is why he’s there.
How Messi Fits Into the Spider-Man: Brand New Day Trailer
Messi lifts his phone as the trailer’s point of contact with Spider-Man becomes clear. The screen shows the “Spidey Tracker” tool—something fans can use to follow the superhero’s whereabouts. The tracker is credited to Ned, who previously developed it for Peter.
With that clue in hand, Peter quickly dashes off to change, returning almost immediately in his Spidey suit to help Messi with his search.
The trailer ends with Peter asking Messi about heights, and Messi answering “Como?” before the two swing together through Manhattan in a big, showy finale. Messi even shouts during the ride in a way that the trailer plays like he’s performing a voice role reminiscent of Super Mario.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Cast and Characters: Who’s Confirmed for the MCU Sequel?
While Messi is the headline guest in this trailer, the wider campaign has also been building out other character expectations. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to hit theaters on July 31, and with about a month to go, the studio’s promotional run is in full swing.
As with most teaser-style trailers, this new footage likely won’t appear exactly as shown in the final movie. Still, it follows a recent period where official materials have already confirmed Hulk’s presence and continued teasing Sadie Sink’s role—one that increasingly resembles an MCU interpretation of Jean Grey.
What Tom Holland Has (and Hasn’t) Said About the MCU
Alongside press and fan appearances, Holland has been trying to avoid giving away details about the MCU’s next moves, though not always successfully.
In one instance, he was asked whether he would appear in Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars. Holland didn’t provide a direct response, but he did strongly suggest he’s involved, while also confirming that at least one person still knows Peter Parker is Spider-Man even after Doctor Strange’s spell.
