Manchester United Block JJ Gabriel Exit as Teen Trains in Barcelona
Manchester United have turned down a request to end JJ Gabriel’s registration, leaving the 16-year-old attacking midfielder unable to join another English club before next summer. The academy standout, regarded internally as a potential first-team player, has instead moved abroad and is maintaining his fitness in Barcelona while the disagreement over his future continues.
United’s plans for Gabriel
Gabriel had been given a prominent route towards senior football at Old Trafford. He featured for Michael Carrick’s first-team group during pre-season and has regularly trained with the senior squad, while the club also arranged meetings intended to underline his importance to their longer-term plans.
Those efforts included an introduction to Sir Alex Ferguson and discussions with former United manager Ruben Amorim about the teenager’s prospective development. Gabriel had already strengthened his reputation by being named U18 Premier League Player of the Season last term, before opening the current campaign with a hat-trick in the UEFA Youth League.
United were also prepared to make unusual allowances over his identity within the first-team setup. The club agreed to his proposed No. 77 shirt and sought Premier League approval for him to wear “Gabriel JR” on his jersey.
Conditions over training and selection
The relationship has deteriorated after Gabriel’s representatives set out a series of sporting demands which United declined to accept. His camp did not want him to return for pre-season alongside the Under-21 side, insisting that he should work only with the senior group at Carrington.
- Gabriel’s representatives sought exclusive first-team training rather than an academy return.
- They asked for a minimum of 20 minutes across fixtures against Sabah, Brighton and Bournemouth.
- United refused that request and did not include him on their Champions League A list.
- He was also left out of the matchday group for the Carabao Cup.
Financial terms have added another obstacle. Gabriel would have been able to sign a pre-contract arrangement had he remained at United, but negotiations have stalled amid substantial salary expectations and the sporting guarantees sought by his representatives.
Registration decision limits English options
United’s refusal to cancel Gabriel’s registration means a move to a domestic rival is not available until the summer. The club are therefore continuing to hold his registration despite the player’s camp pursuing an exit.
Gabriel is currently training with a private coach at the British School Stadium in Castelldefels, near Barcelona. A transfer to a European club appears the more realistic route, subject to him holding a European passport through his parents.
European clubs monitor the situation
Barcelona are keenly aware of Gabriel’s regular time in the city and could seek to benefit from the impasse. Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are also following developments, although Bayern are reluctant to meet the reported seven-figure wage demands.
For United, the priority remains retaining a player they had expected to develop towards the first team. For Gabriel and his representatives, the next decision is whether a European club can offer the financial package and senior pathway that have proved impossible to agree in Manchester.
