Liverpool Consider Virgil van Dijk Contract Extension Amid Strong Start
Liverpool are weighing up whether to extend Virgil van Dijk’s stay beyond the end of his current contract, with the captain remaining central to Andoni Iraola’s unbeaten opening to the 2026-27 season.
The Dutch defender has long been expected to follow Mohamed Salah out of Anfield, a year after the forward’s departure. However, Liverpool’s need for experience in central defence could yet persuade the club to open negotiations over another 12 months for their captain.
Van Dijk has made 380 appearances since arriving from Southampton in January 2018 and has lifted both the Premier League and Champions League during his time on Merseyside. He has also passed 100 international caps for the Netherlands, bringing considerable authority to a defence now featuring younger options.
Jeremy Jacquet has adapted quickly since joining Liverpool, while Italian teenager Geovani Leoni is regarded as another important long-term prospect. Neither, though, offers the established leadership and elite-level record that Van Dijk continues to provide.
Real Madrid interest could test Liverpool
Real Madrid have been linked with a move for Van Dijk after taking Ibrahima Konate from Liverpool in 2026. The Spanish club could be among several sides monitoring the situation should the 35-year-old become available without a transfer fee.
Former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey believes Madrid’s interest would inevitably be significant, regardless of Van Dijk’s contract status. He said the prospect of a move to the Bernabeu can turn a player’s attention, while warning that Liverpool allowing another leading figure to leave at the expiry of his deal would be difficult to accept.
A move elsewhere in Europe, or potentially to Major League Soccer, may also be considered if Van Dijk does leave Anfield. For now, there has been no suggestion from the player that retirement is close.
Van Dijk focused on present
Van Dijk has consistently avoided setting out long-range plans, insisting that his focus is on maintaining the physical standards required to play regularly. He believes careful preparation can keep him available and said he remains in a strong place physically.
The Liverpool captain has also acknowledged the scrutiny that comes with ageing as a footballer, noting that performances are often judged differently once a player reaches his mid-thirties. His priority, he said, is to contribute as effectively as possible for the team both on the pitch and within the squad.
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has backed his fellow Dutchman to remain at the highest level for several more years. The former Chelsea and Leeds United forward described Van Dijk as a player with limited physical wear, arguing that he could choose any destination if his mentality remains fixed on elite football.
That assessment will encourage Liverpool as they decide whether to retain a player who was once among the leading contenders for the Ballon d’Or. With Iraola’s side unbeaten and Van Dijk still a key figure, an extension until 2028 could offer the club time to develop its younger defenders without losing its most experienced voice at the back.
