Maddison Stars as Tottenham Beat Coventry 3-1 to End Winless Run
James Maddison marked his return to Tottenham’s starting side with a spectacular early goal as the London club beat Coventry 3-1 on Monday, securing a first victory in seven attempts and an important lift in their fight to move away from the Premier League relegation places.
Maddison ends lengthy wait with landmark strike
Tottenham took control in the 14th minute when Mohammed Kudus found Maddison, who sent a first-time effort into the top corner from outside the box. It was the midfielder’s first goal in 610 days and another notable entry in his record as one of the division’s leading long-range scorers.
- The goal was Maddison’s 21st Premier League strike from outside the penalty area since his August 2018 debut.
- He is at least two clear of every other player in that period for league goals scored from range.
- Kevin De Bruyne and James Ward-Prowse are among the established set-piece and distance specialists he has moved beyond.
Maddison later left the field to a standing ovation, having made an immediate case for a regular role after returning to the XI.
Coventry reply before Marmoush restores advantage
Coventry arrived having won their previous two matches and recovered from the early setback shortly after half-time. Jack Rudoni punished a Tottenham defensive mistake in the 50th minute to bring the visitors level.
The response came quickly. Andy Robertson created the opening for Omar Marmoush nine minutes later, and the forward struck powerfully to put Tottenham back in front. The goal was Marmoush’s first for the club following his summer move from Manchester City.
Late changes and Davies goal complete win
Roberto De Zerbi turned to his bench as the match entered its final stages. Mathys Tel and Dejan Kulusevski were introduced, with Kulusevski receiving a strong reception on his first appearance in 526 days.
- Tosin Adarabioyo and Robertson were forced to leave the match.
- Conor Gallagher, Mateus Fernandes and Ben Davies entered during the reshuffle.
- Archie Gray moved across to right-back after the changes.
Coventry were increasingly pinned back in stoppage time, and Davies settled the contest in the 96th minute. The defender drove a low shot from outside the area into the net to make it 3-1.
Tottenham seek a platform for improvement
The result gives De Zerbi’s side a much-needed starting point after their difficult run. With Maddison back among the starters and Marmoush opening his account, Tottenham will look to turn the victory into greater consistency in their forthcoming domestic fixtures and establish more distance between themselves and the bottom of the table.
