Juventus slump to 3-0 Lazio defeat despite dominating possession
Juventus were beaten 3-0 by Lazio after a possession-heavy performance unravelled at both ends of the pitch, leaving the Bianconeri eighth in Serie A. Juventus had 58 per cent of the ball and completed 526 passes, but managed only two attempts on target as Lazio made decisive use of their limited openings.
Lazio strike at key moments
The visitors took control shortly before the interval when Provstgaard scored in the 37th minute. Juventus struggled to follow runs from deep, with their defensive line caught static as Lazio found the breakthrough.
Juventus did not turn their territorial advantage into sustained pressure after the restart. Instead, their push for an equaliser left space for Lazio to attack on the break.
- Provstgaard opened the scoring in the 37th minute.
- Isaksen made it 2-0 in the 66th minute after Nuno Tavares created the opportunity.
- Dele-Bashiru added a late third goal against a tiring Juventus defence.
Lazio scored three times from chances valued at 0.54 expected goals, underlining Juventus’s problems with tracking runners and dealing with shots in their own area. The Juventus goalkeeper was not credited with a save, despite Lazio registering three shots on target, and was left exposed by the defending in front of him for each goal.
Possession without a cutting edge
Juventus held the ball for long spells and won 15 aerial duels, but their build-up did not produce the quality required to trouble Mandas. Their midfield circulated possession without consistently breaking through Lazio’s organised 4-3-3, while the forwards received little useful service.
- Weston McKennie put in considerable work between the lines but could not supply the incisive passing Juventus needed.
- Douglas Luiz was taken off in the 67th minute after failing to set the tempo or interrupt Lazio’s midfield rhythm.
- A midfielder tasked with covering ground was frequently forced into recovery runs as Lazio moved the ball through Frattesi.
- The wide attacker removed in the 67th minute did not produce a meaningful cross or an effort on target.
- Randal Kolo Muani occupied Lazio’s central defenders but was unable to use his pace or finishing because of the lack of service.
The decision to start Alajbegovic did not bring the desired attacking impact. The youngster found it difficult against Sutalo and was replaced at half-time by Nick Woltemade, who offered a different physical presence but encountered the same shortage of chances.
Defensive structure breaks down
Kalulu was active on the right side of Juventus’s defensive unit and competed well in individual duels, but Lazio repeatedly found joy down the channels, particularly through Nuno Tavares. Isaksen also bypassed Juventus too easily on the flank, with the home side unable to control the supply into transition.
Juventus’s central defenders struggled with Lazio’s movement, while the captain won several aerial challenges but was out of position for the second goal. The back line never regained its organisation as Lazio attacked directly after regaining possession.
- A Juventus wide defender was withdrawn in the 74th minute after offering little attacking width and limited defensive resistance against Isaksen.
- A substitute introduced for Douglas Luiz in the 67th minute added energy on the right but could not provide the final pass.
- Another replacement entered for the final 15 minutes, when Lazio had already dropped into a compact defensive shape.
- An 87th-minute change came too late to alter the course of the match.
Juventus also made a second-half triple change in an effort to revive the contest, but the alterations did not halt Lazio’s momentum. The result was a damaging defeat in which Juventus controlled possession yet remained vulnerable whenever Lazio broke forward.
