Juventus Condemn Fans After Mazzola Tribute Disrupted During Atalanta Win
Juventus marked a 2-0 Serie A win over Atalanta with a strong public condemnation of supporters who disrupted a minute’s silence for Mazzola at Allianz Stadium.
Tribute overshadowed by Curva Sud disruption
- Italian football paid tribute to Mazzola, who died on Saturday at the age of 83, with a pre-match minute of silence in Turin.
- A group in the Curva Sud turned away from the field and continued singing Juventus songs during the commemoration.
- Much of the stadium responded immediately, with thousands of spectators applauding loudly in an effort to silence the chants and restore the occasion’s dignity.
- Juventus addressed the incident after the final whistle, making clear that club rivalries could not excuse disrespect during a memorial.
In its statement, Juventus said remembrance was a collective duty beyond shirts, colours and allegiances, stressing that those being honoured deserved respect from everyone in the stadium.
Mazzola’s standing in Italian football
Mazzola’s career included winning the 1968 European Championship with Italy, as well as major European success with Inter Milan, Juventus’ historic rivals. That Inter connection appeared to prompt the actions of the small section of home supporters, despite his wider status in the Italian game.
Atalanta coach Sarri described the scenes as deeply unpleasant and suggested they reflected a younger generation failing to appreciate Mazzola’s achievements. He said that honouring a player of such importance should be the minimum expected, irrespective of the club he represented.
Juventus move to 10 points
On the pitch, Juventus’ victory against Atalanta took them to 10 points from five league matches. Serie A now enters a three-week international break before Luciano Spalletti’s side visit Cagliari on October 11.
The interval gives Juventus medical staff additional time to work with eight injured first-team players. Kenan Yildiz and Manuel Locatelli are among those currently unavailable.
