Chelsea’s Cole Palmer Expected to Miss England Duty for Fitness Management
Cole Palmer is expected to withdraw from Thomas Tuchel’s latest England squad as Chelsea manage the forward’s workload following a season affected by repeated fitness problems. The 24-year-old played all 90 minutes of Friday’s 3-0 defeat to Brentford at the G-Tech Community Stadium, but is set to remain with Chelsea rather than report for international duty.
What changed for the club
Palmer’s absence would be a precaution designed to protect his physical condition after thigh and hamstring trouble disrupted much of the 2025-26 campaign. He made 34 appearances for Chelsea, starting 24 Premier League matches, and returned 11 goals with three assists, but did not consistently reach full fitness.
His recent output under Xabi Alonso has nevertheless been encouraging. Palmer has scored four times and created two goals across his last seven matches, form which earned him a return to England contention after he was left out of the World Cup squad.
Alonso has supported a measured approach to the player’s recovery, saying difficult spells with injury can teach a player how to avoid recurring problems. The Chelsea manager said Palmer had worked hard on prevention after a challenging period and was seeking to avoid the return of symptoms.
Palmer last appeared for England against Japan in March. He has two goals in 14 senior caps and will now have to wait to strengthen his case for a regular place under Tuchel.
Competition context
Tuchel had made clear that Palmer’s selection was only the start of the process. The England head coach said a recall had to be followed by performances capable of earning and retaining a shirt, while pointing to Palmer’s revived goal and assist numbers as evidence that he had deserved another opportunity.
Tuchel also identified Trent Alexander-Arnold as another player with a chance to make an impression in camp, stressing that the defender had not become unavailable for selection and should arrive ready to show his best level.
England could be without further senior options for the Nations League programme:
- Marcus Rashford is managing a hip complaint that has needed careful treatment since the World Cup. He was substituted in the 77th minute of Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Fulham on Sunday.
- Kobbie Mainoo is also carrying an injury after playing 80 minutes at Craven Cottage. The 21-year-old was part of the World Cup group but did not feature in the tournament.
The possible loss of Palmer, Rashford and Mainoo would leave Tuchel with fewer attacking and midfield choices for a demanding four-match window.
What is scheduled next
England begin their Nations League run against World Cup winners Spain at Wembley on September 26. They then travel to Prague to meet the Czech Republic on September 29 before an away fixture against Croatia on October 3.
The international window concludes with England hosting the Czech Republic at Wembley on October 6. Tuchel will need to assess the condition of his available players before deciding how to cover the expected absences across four matches in three weeks.
