Jujutsu Kaisen Proves Gojo’s Legacy Through a Perfect New Successor

Gojo Satoru wasn’t just the most dangerous sorcerer in Jujutsu Kaisen; he effectively defined what “modern strength” looked like. Three years ago, his reign ended in Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 236, which was officially released on September 25, 2023, as part of Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #43. In the climactic fight of the era’s strongest versus the strongest, Ryomen Sukuna landed the World-splitting Dismantle and brought Gojo’s story to a close. Not long after, Sukuna was also defeated—helped along largely by what Gojo set in motion—marking the start of a brand-new phase for the series.

With Gege Akutami reshaping the world after that turning point, Gojo’s “perfect successor” was officially chosen. That successor was none other than Gojo’s beloved protégé and a person tied to him through a distant blood connection: Yuta Okkotsu. Yuta didn’t just inherit a title—he became head of the Gojo clan, and simultaneously positioned himself as the next plausible bearer of Gojo’s Limitless technique.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s Gojo Clan Made Yuta Okkotsu The Replacement Of Satoru

After Gojo Satoru died, the fate of the Gojo clan hung in uncertainty. Fans didn’t have a clean answer for who could realistically step into the role left behind by the strongest modern sorcerer. Eventually, that gap was closed when Gege Akutami released a special one-shot in the final volume release of Jujutsu Kaisen, dated December 24, 2024. Many readers expected this to correspond to what they believed was Chapter 472, and the one-shot’s contents clarified the key question directly: following Gojo’s death, Yuta Okkotsu was confirmed as the new head of the Gojo clan.

Making Yuta the clan head is a decision that raises eyebrows. Yuta isn’t deeply tied to the Gojo clan in the way you might expect from someone raised entirely within its politics and traditions. There also likely would have been intense internal power struggles among the clan elites—people who would naturally want to climb to the top. Yet the series went with Okkotsu anyway, and since then, the Gojo clan appears to have changed significantly. Even 68 years later, in the modern era, it’s stated that Yuta remained the head of the Gojo clan until the very end, and that his son, Iori Okkotsu, also belonged to the clan. The lineage continues: Yuta’s grandchildren, Tsurugi and Yuka Okkotsu, are also members. Taken together, this implies the clan shifted its direction after the Shinju showdown, bringing in more relatives and effectively broadening who counts as part of the post-conflict Gojo circle.

One reason Yuta was allowed to keep the head position is that he functions as a “perfect replacement” for Satoru not only through raw capability, but through the web of legendary connections that matter in Jujutsu Kaisen. A major factor behind both Gojo and Yuta’s potential suitability is their distant link to Michizane Sugawara. Gojo mentioned Sugawara in Jujutsu Kaisen 0 on July 28, 2017, and it was later explained that both Yuta and Gojo share that distant ancestry. Because of that shared bloodline, both characters draw a portion of their extraordinary cursed energy from Michizane Sugawara. If the Gojo clan is directly tied to this historical figure, then Yuta becoming the ideal successor may come down to that inherited cursed-energy advantage.

Yuta’s Copy technique gave him access to a wide range of powerful abilities—and some of those options are described as extremely “broken.”

Yuta Okkotsu Is Officially Set Up As The Next Wielder Of Gojo’s Limitless Power

Yuta’s role as Gojo’s successor isn’t explained solely through genealogy. In Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 260 (officially released May 20, 20-24), Yuta Okkotsu took over Gojo Satoru’s body by using Copy and combining it with Kenjaku’s brain-hopping method. Using that setup, Yuta could use both Limitless and the Cursed Trait known as Six Eyes. After the Shinjuku Showdown ended, Yuta transferred back into his own body. However, many readers may miss a crucial nuance: the story suggests Yuta could have retained Limitless as well, meaning the prized clan technique didn’t necessarily vanish when he returned.

“I apologize that I looked down on you. I didn’t think you were capable of going that far, Okkotsu Yuta!” — Ryomen Sukuna praises Yuta’s resolve, Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter #261

The manga backs up this possibility through Kenjaku’s behavior. Each time Kenjaku swaps bodies, he keeps the techniques of his hosts and has them effectively etched into his brain. For example, Kenjaku still had Anti-Gravity from Kaori Itadori. The logic is tied to how cursed techniques are stored: they’re engraved in the right prefrontal cortex, a point confirmed by Ryomen Sukuna in Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 230 (July 31, 2023). When Kenjaku’s brain was inside Kaori’s body, the technique was imprinted onto his brain—and Kenjaku carried it forward.

“Your cursed technique is etched into your brain. Roughly around the right prefrontal cortex.” — Ryomen Sukuna explains how Cursed Techniques work, Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter #230

So when Yuta’s mind was inside Gojo’s body, Limitless would have been engraved onto Yuta’s brain in the right prefrontal cortex—and then Yuta could take that with him upon returning. This is emphasized directly by Ryomen Sukuna in Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 262 (June 10, 2024). Sukuna’s statement frames Yuta’s ability to use Limitless as a side effect of Kenjaku’s cursed technique rather than something unrelated to that body-swap mechanism. When you combine this with Yuta’s distant blood connection to Michizane Sugawara—and the implication that he could keep the technique—it becomes easier to understand why he’s positioned as Gojo’s ideal successor.

“Did she [Rika] not come with the body swap? Can he even use the copied techniques in this form? Even if he can, I have a good idea of what he has in his arsenal. Right now, Limitless is amounting to nothing more than a side effect of Kenjaku’s technique.” — Ryomen Sukuna states that Limitless was being used through Yuta’s brain, Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter #262

Why Yuta Okkotsu Surpassed Gojo’s Power Level By Adulthood

Considering everything working in Yuta’s favor, it isn’t shocking that by adulthood he’s described as the strongest sorcerer. By that point, Yuta has also unlocked a special fused form with Rika. This is shown in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 17, dated January 5, 2026. Rika’s power alone is framed as comparable to Yuji Itadori, but the text goes further: Yuta himself is portrayed as an absolute monster. His cursed energy is said to be on a level directly comparable to—and possibly even beyond—Ryomen Sukuna at that stage.

“That amount of cursed energy isn’t something that can be contained in a single person. Someone with unfathomable power must’ve poured cursed energy into that ring over the course of years…decades!” Maru is shocked at Yuta’s power, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter #18

Beyond that, if Yuta could keep techniques like Limitless, then he would stand as the top sorcerer of the era. At the same time, he’s also described as having a copy of Ryomen Sukuna’s Shrine. That combination effectively places Yuta at the very top—potentially even stronger than Yuji Itadori. The downside is that readers never got to watch Yuta fight in his prime. The story says he died of heartbreak following the death of Maki Zenin, and this detail is confirmed in the very first chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo. If Gege Akutami ever returns to the main storyline, the hope is that the series shows Yuta at the peak of his strength—so the “perfect successor” label is backed up with the kind of performance fans never got to see.
