Jorge Jesus Deploys Bernardo Silva in Portugal Defence at First Camp
Bernardo Silva was placed with Portugal’s defensive unit as Jorge Jesus began his first official training camp in charge of the national side, a notable opening move at Cidade do Futebol in Oeiras. The 25-man group has gathered to begin work under the new coach ahead of the forthcoming international programme.
Bernardo’s role stands out in Jesus’ first session
Jesus split the outfield players into attacking and defensive groups during Tuesday afternoon’s session. Bernardo, normally regarded as a left-footed creative midfielder, worked alongside defenders as well as holding midfielders João Palhinha and Rúben Neves.
Vitinha and João Neves, by contrast, were assigned to the attacking group and trained closer to the forwards. Diogo Costa, Rui Silva and Samuel Soares followed separate goalkeeper exercises.
The early drill suggests that Jesus wants clear structure without limiting individual adaptability. His work with Bernardo in the defensive group may be part of an effort to establish responsibilities across the side rather than a definitive change in the Real Madrid player’s position.
A familiar positional experiment
The arrangement carries particular significance given the pair’s history at Benfica. During the 2014-15 pre-season, Jesus used a 19-year-old Bernardo at left-back amid injury problems in the squad.
Bernardo took that episode as an indication that his long-term prospects at Benfica were limited and subsequently left for Monaco. Jesus later explained that the use of Bernardo in defence had been a short-term solution, not an attempt to convert him permanently from midfield.
How the opening session unfolded

- Jesus organised the outfield contingent into two tactical sections.
- Bernardo joined Palhinha, Rúben Neves and defensive players, while Vitinha and João Neves worked with the front line.
- The three goalkeepers trained independently as preparations continued.
Portugal seek rapid adaptation
Jesus has previously handed Bernardo a senior Benfica debut, and his first Portugal session placed immediate emphasis on organisation and positional options. The squad will continue at Cidade do Futebol as the Seleção prepare for their next fixtures, with players expected to absorb the manager’s requirements quickly.

- João Palhinha and Rúben Neves were among those working in that unit.
- Vitinha and João Neves trained alongside the forwards.
