Johan Manzambi Header Earns Aston Villa Win at Newcastle
Aston Villa left St. James’ Park with a 1-0 Premier League victory over Newcastle as Manzambi’s first-half header settled a tightly contested match and lifted Unai Emery’s side to 12th place.
Manzambi header decides the contest
The match began at a high tempo, with both teams creating momentum in an open opening period. Villa made their breakthrough in the 36th minute when João Gomes supplied an accurate delivery into the area for Manzambi, who headed beyond Newcastle goalkeeper Lukás Hornícek.
- Manzambi scored the only goal of the game in the 36th minute.
- João Gomes provided the cross for the decisive header.
- The goal was Manzambi’s second in the Premier League this season.
- Villa saw out the win despite sustained late pressure from Matthias Jaissle’s Newcastle side.
Newcastle came close to finding an equaliser in the closing stages, but Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki made a significant save to keep out Sven Botman. The visitors protected their narrow advantage through the final minutes to secure all three points.
Emery praises Manzambi’s all-round influence
Emery said the match-winner has brought more than goals since joining Villa, pointing to his technical ability, understanding of the game and physical presence in both penalty areas.
“He has skills and intelligence, and his physicality is very important as well,” Emery said. “He helps us defensively and helps us compete in offensive duels. I am very happy, and of course he has scored another goal. It is fantastic for him as well.”
The Villa manager also praised the midfielder’s adaptation to the club’s demands and ambitions, particularly after the team’s recent seasons of competing near the leading Premier League positions and in Europe.
“He has made a very good impact with his qualities and his desire to join us in the same challenges and performances,” Emery said. “We have had consistency over the last three or four years in the Premier League, in the top positions, and in Europe as well.”
Late fitness concern for Villa scorer
Manzambi was withdrawn with fewer than 20 minutes remaining, prompting a note of caution from Emery after the final whistle. The manager suggested fatigue may have been a factor but did not rule out a muscular issue.
“I do not know,” Emery said. “He was a bit tired and maybe it was something muscular. Hopefully it is not much.”
