JJ Gabriel Seeks Manchester United Exit After Brighton Cup Omission

Manchester United teenager JJ Gabriel was left out of the squad for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup third-round defeat to Brighton after his representatives lodged a request to leave the club, placing the 15-year-old’s future under immediate scrutiny.

Gabriel had been in line for a first senior involvement following an eye-catching UEFA Youth League debut in which he scored a hat-trick. Instead, he did not feature as United surrendered a two-goal lead and exited the competition against Brighton.

Michael Carrick confirmed that he has been part of the discussions surrounding the academy forward, but said the club’s responsibility to protect a player of Gabriel’s age must come before the wider attention around a possible move.

“We have to handle the whole situation with real care,” Carrick said after the cup tie. “He is only 15. For me, and for the club, the most important thing is making sure that our young players are looked after.”

Carrick said Gabriel’s welfare, wellbeing and level of public exposure were central considerations. He added that United staff were involved in the relevant conversations, while repeating that the matter required a cautious approach.

European interest grows ahead of birthday deadline

Barcelona and Real Madrid are monitoring Gabriel’s situation as they assess the possibility of pursuing him next summer. The forward holds an Irish passport, allowing him to move directly to a European club without being restricted by the post-Brexit rules that affect many English-based young players.

United have a significant date approaching. Gabriel turns 16 on October 6 and will then be able to sign scholarship paperwork, making the coming weeks important in determining whether the club can settle the stand-off and retain one of its most highly regarded academy players.

Fulham response needed after cup setback

While Gabriel’s position is addressed internally, Carrick must also arrest a difficult start for the first team. The Brighton loss extended United’s poor early-season run, with the club having won only two of its first six matches in all competitions.

United return to Premier League action against Fulham on Sunday, when Carrick’s side will seek a response after allowing their cup advantage to disappear and seeing pressure rise around their results.
