Jan Oblak Backs Julian Alvarez Ahead of Atletico Madrid’s Real Derby
Jan Oblak has moved to settle the uncertainty around Julian Alvarez before Atletico Madrid’s derby meeting with Real Madrid, insisting the Argentine forward retains the backing of the captaincy group and will continue to give everything for the club.

The goalkeeper and club captain addressed the situation at Atletico’s Media Day ahead of the match at the Estadio Metropolitano. Alvarez had sought a move to Barcelona in the summer of 2026, but Atletico’s hierarchy refused to open talks with the Catalan club.
A reported €150 million offer from Real Madrid was also rejected, with Atletico maintaining that the forward would only be available for his €500 million release clause. Alvarez did not pursue possible moves to Arsenal or Manchester City, and senior players have worked to ensure the issue did not create a divide within the squad.
Oblak said the group considers the matter closed. “For the players and captains, Julian’s situation is in the past,” he said. “He is here with us, we support him and he is giving his all. He has already played matches in which he gave everything he had.”
The Slovenian added that he has no doubts about Alvarez’s commitment while he remains an Atletico player, saying the forward will do all he can to help deliver the best possible results.
Focus turns to the Metropolitano derby
Atletico now face a significant early-season test against their city rivals before the autumn international break. Diego Simeone’s side have collected 13 points from their first six league games, but Real arrive in second place and with a two-point advantage.
Oblak described the fixture as one players are eager to experience, stressing that the occasion will not alter Atletico’s approach. He said his mentality in every derby since his first has been to win, with players expected to leave everything on the pitch and contribute to the team.
The captain also made clear that Atletico’s ambitions extend beyond qualifying for the Champions League. He said the club will pursue the La Liga title despite the challenge posed by Madrid, Barcelona, Athletic Club, Villarreal and Real Betis.
“We do not compete only to get into the top four; we want to win the league,” Oblak said. He acknowledged that the campaign will bring difficult spells as well as positive ones, but said Atletico must retain belief over the course of a long season.
