James Milner Completes New York City Marathon in 3:09:04
James Milner has taken his competitive edge from the football pitch to the streets of New York, completing the 2026 New York City Marathon in 3:09:04 less than a year after ending his 24-season professional career.
Milner delivers another endurance milestone
The former Leeds United, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton midfielder ran Sunday’s marathon at an average pace of 7:13 per mile.
- Event: 2026 New York City Marathon
- Finishing time: 3 hours, 9 minutes and 4 seconds
- Average pace: 7 minutes, 13 seconds per mile
- First-half split: 1:31
- Second-half split: 1:38
Milner’s splits showed a quicker opening half before a more measured final 13 miles, yet the overall time underlined the fitness standards that defined his playing career.
A career built on durability
Milner retired at the conclusion of the 2025-26 campaign, bringing to a close a career that lasted 24 years and took him through six major English clubs. His reputation was built not only on versatility and reliability in matches, but also on a relentless approach to preparation.
Even after reaching 40 in January, Milner continued to set the pace in pre-season conditioning work. That commitment made him a popular figure among supporters throughout his spells in the Premier League, where he was widely regarded as one of the game’s most dependable professionals.
From football retirement to a new challenge
The New York result suggests retirement has not significantly changed Milner’s routine or appetite for difficult physical tests. His marathon performance came only months after he stepped away from football, and his ability to sustain a strong pace across 26.2 miles offered a familiar illustration of the work ethic he carried through his club career.
