Inter Miami punish DC United’s high line in commanding 4-0 victory
Inter Miami turned DC United’s aggressive approach against them in a 4-0 win, with Luis Suarez striking twice before Lionel Messi took over after the interval. Kily Gonzalez’s side were content to let the visitors circulate possession in harmless zones, then attacked the space behind their high defensive line with ruthless efficiency.
Miami’s transition game decided the contest
DC United attempted to press high and maintain pressure, but Miami repeatedly played through the first wave. Their security in central areas allowed the home side to move quickly into the open ground beyond the visitors’ defence.
German Berterame was central to that plan. His movement unsettled DC United’s full-backs and he supplied both Suarez goals, first in the third minute and again six minutes before half-time. Messi also played an important part in the build-up to the second, using his vision to help create the opening that put Miami firmly in command.
Suarez’s finishing gave Miami the control that their defensive structure then protected. Casemiro, deployed in the centre of defence, read vertical passes early and helped progress possession from the back, while Micael won his individual contests before departing in the 70th minute.
Messi found the spaces after half-time
With DC United increasingly stretched, Messi needed only two minutes of the second half to add a third. Suarez provided the decisive pass after the pair combined in the final third, extending a display in which the Uruguayan led the line with sharp movement as well as two goals.
Messi then completed the scoring on 60 minutes, converting after Rodrigo De Paul found him. It was a decisive second-half response from the Argentine, whose movement and presence created room for Miami’s other attackers even when he was not directly involved in the final action.
- 3rd minute: Suarez opened the scoring from Berterame’s delivery.
- 39th minute: Berterame created Suarez’s second to give Miami a two-goal half-time lead.
- 47th minute: Messi scored shortly after the restart following Suarez’s assist.
- 60th minute: De Paul set up Messi for Miami’s fourth goal.
Midfield control supported a compact defensive display
Miami held 62% possession, with Matias Galarza linking the deeper midfield areas to the attack and finding useful positions in the half-spaces. David Ayala set the tone in the press, disrupting DC United’s rhythm before being replaced in the 70th minute.
De Paul’s work without the ball gave the forwards licence to remain high. His assist for Messi’s second goal capped an influential display in which he combined defensive coverage with purposeful distribution.
DC United did find occasional routes into wide areas, but Miami’s full-backs dealt with them effectively. Gonzalo Lujan stayed disciplined against overlapping runs, while Sergi Reguilon provided width in possession and remained secure defensively before his 78th-minute withdrawal.
Dayne St. Clair had a relatively quiet evening, making two saves as DC United managed only two attempts on target. The goalkeeper also handled brief aerial pressure confidently and used his distribution to launch Miami attacks.

Changes preserved Miami’s control
Riquelme Fillipi replaced Suarez in the 61st minute and maintained a forward threat against a tiring defence. At 70 minutes, Telasco Segovia came on for Ayala and Maximiliano Falcon replaced Micael, with both helping Miami retain their shape and see out the clean sheet.
Alexander Shaw and Ian Fray entered in the 78th minute, replacing Reguilon and adding fresh defensive cover for the closing stages.
- Suarez finished with two goals and an assist, while Berterame created both first-half strikes.
- Messi scored twice after the break, exploiting the greater spaces left by DC United.
- De Paul combined an assist with the midfield work that protected Miami’s attacking front line.
- Casemiro and Micael anchored a defence that limited DC United to two shots on target.
- Gonzalez’s game plan used DC United’s high line as an invitation for quick, direct attacks.
