Haaland Header Seals Manchester City Win Over Coventry

Erling Haaland’s header gave Manchester City a tight home win over Coventry City on Saturday, extending the champions’ perfect start to the Premier League campaign to three matches.

The Norwegian met an Antoine Semenyo delivery with force at the Etihad Stadium to settle the contest. It was also a significant afternoon for City’s rebuilt side, with £125 million arrival Enzo Fernandez making his first start and Elliot Anderson completing 155 successful passes in an influential midfield display.

Haaland backs City’s new arrivals

City are adapting to major changes in personnel and approach under Enzo Maresca, but Haaland believes Fernandez and Anderson have the experience to cope with the demands of competing for trophies.

Fernandez already understands title pressure and Premier League football, Haaland said, adding that the Argentine had immediately fitted into the side. He also pointed to Anderson’s domestic experience and England involvement as evidence that the midfielder knows what is required at a leading club.

Haaland said the squad must help the newcomers settle, as City did when he first joined the club. He added that elite players are expected to arrive and produce results quickly.

New look for City striker

Speaking after the Coventry victory, Haaland discussed the shorter hairstyle he has worn since the beginning of the season. The forward said the change had made life easier and that he felt it was the right time to alter his appearance.

While he said he still missed having long hair, Haaland explained that he was enjoying the new look and expected his hair to grow back in time.

Brazil memory remains special

Haaland was also asked about Norway’s World Cup victory over Brazil, when he scored twice to eliminate the South American side. He offered a light-hearted apology for the defeat while describing the occasion as one of the defining matches in Norway’s football history.

The striker said the fixture carried extra significance because Norway had also faced Brazil at their previous World Cup appearance. He noted that Norway remain the only national team Brazil have never defeated.

For Haaland, the manner of the win was as important as the result. He said Norway controlled the match and called it the best performance in the country’s history, while acknowledging the occasion of facing a nation so closely associated with football.

Porto, Manchester United and Norwich await

City now begin their Champions League programme with a trip to Porto. Maresca’s team will then visit Manchester United in the derby at Old Trafford before returning home to face Norwich City in the Carabao Cup third round.

Those three fixtures place City in three competitions within a fortnight, offering an early test of the depth and cohesion of a squad reshaped during the summer.
