Graham Potter Backs Arsenal Striker Viktor Gyokeres for Sweden Return
Viktor Gyokeres has been included in Sweden’s latest squad despite a limited start to the new Arsenal season, with head coach Graham Potter backing the striker to rediscover his rhythm during the international period.

The 28-year-old Sweden international was Arsenal’s leading scorer as Mikel Arteta’s side won the Premier League in 2025-26, ending the club’s lengthy wait for the title. His role has changed sharply this term, however, with his only league involvement a 12-minute substitute appearance across the opening four fixtures.
Gyokeres was handed a rare opportunity from the start in the Carabao Cup win over Ipswich, but did not score in Arsenal’s 4-2 victory. The lack of minutes and goals has prompted questions over the forward’s standing at the Emirates Stadium after a campaign in which he had been the side’s principal No. 9.
Potter, speaking when naming Sweden’s squad in Solna on Wednesday, said the situation should not be treated as a major concern. He pointed to Gyokeres’ record as a Premier League champion and prolific Arsenal striker, as well as his contributions in qualifying and at the World Cup.
“Form moves in different directions, as it does in life,” Potter said. “He has won the Premier League, scored plenty of goals for Arsenal as a centre-forward, was outstanding in qualifying and did well at the World Cup.”
The Sweden manager accepted that players competing at the top level will face criticism, but stressed that Gyokeres retains the full support of the national set-up. Potter said the forward is happy with Sweden and that the staff will work to provide the environment needed for him to remain an elite player.
Potter also believes international duty can offer an opportunity for Gyokeres to reset after his reduced involvement at club level. He said rapid changes are part of a footballer’s career and that a different setting can sometimes benefit a player who needs to regain enjoyment and confidence.
Changes in Sweden’s squad
Gyokeres remains a key inclusion for Sweden, while Tottenham Hotspur attacker Dejan Kulusevski misses out as he continues his recovery from the long-term injury that has kept him off the pitch since May 2025.
There are also opportunities for new faces in the group. Hammarby defender Hampus Skoglund has been selected, alongside Lech Poznan player Patrik Walemark.
